This family includes a native and an introduced species of Sambucus (Elders), as well as Viburnum tinus. These plants have large, opposite, pinnate leaves, abundant, small white flowers and small black, fleshy fruit.

The family was once included in the large family, Caprifoliaceae, which is represented in Tasmania by a couple of introduced species.
