This
is the bladderwort family, and is represented in Tasmania by 6 native
species of Utricularia (n.b. the genus Polypompholyx,
as described in the Students Flora, is now included in Utricularia
). The plants are carnivorous, trapping
small invertebrates in underground or underwater bladders. The plants
occur in very wet peats and one species is aquatic. The flowers are
conspicuous with a corolla with a broad lower lobe.
