The
Violaceae are represented in Tasmania by two very different genera, Melicytus
(formerly known as Hymenanthera) and Viola. Melicytus
dentatus
is a montane shrub that grows in alpine and subalpine heaths, especially
on the Central Plateau. It has small, sparse leaves, conspicuous spines
and very small, solitary flowers. The Tasmanian flora includes both
native and introduced species of Viola. These ground-hugging
herbs have highly asymmetrical flowers with a large bottom petal. |
