Tasmania has
eight native species in three genera of the filmy ferns (family
Hymenophyllaceae). These all grow in the understorey of wet forests
on rocks or as epiphytes. The key feature is that the lamina is only
once cell thick (and indeed, ecologically the filmy ferns function
like large bryophytes). This results in the filmy appearance
of all but one of species that gives them name of filmy ferns. The
exception is Sphaerocionium applanatum because it is densely
covered in hairs. |
