Grammitis poeppigiana (Grammitidaceae)

Grammitis poeppigiana is a common native alpine and subalpine fern that grows on rocks. It has the typical thick unlobed leaves of Grammitis species, but these are only 1-3 cm long. The key feature that distinguishes it from similar species in the alpine zone is the type of hairs.  G. poeppigiana has forked hairs, whereas G. gunnii has simple hairs on the lower surface, including among the sporangia. G. billardieri and G. magellanica have no hairs.
