Tasmania has
three genera in the Asphodelaceae. These are the native genus,
Bulbine, and the two introduced genera, Asphodelus and
Kniphofia. They
have long, narrow, tough, fleshy or hollow leaves.
These genera were once considered to be part of Liliaceae, which was
a very artificial grouping of plants and has therefore been
splintered in numerous families. To see the fates of the other
Tasmanian genera formerly in Liliaceae click
