Pyrorchis
nigricans (Fire orchid or Red beaks) is a moderately common species in
coastal scrubby vegetation near the north coast and on the Tasman
Peninsula. It is most often seen after fire. The plant has a
single, broad, ground hugging leaf and a short, thick, erect stem
that bears several quite large, red-and-white flowers. One obvious
feature of this species is the way the petals and sepals droop. |
