Thismia
rodwayi (Fairy Lanterns) is one of the most remarkable plants in
the Tasmanian flora. It is a saprophyte (i.e. lives on decaying
plant material in the soil) related to the orchids. The plant is
invisible until it flowers (an uncommon event), at which time it
appears as small orange flowers among the leaf litter in wet forest.
It is the only species of this family in Tasmania. |
