Tasmania has
one living species of Thynninorchis
(Elbow Orchids), it is very rare. This species (T. nothofagicola)
is among the
most cryptic of orchids, being short, very slender, dark green in colour,
and matching in colour the mossy rainforest understorey it inhabits. The sepals and petals are all very reduced and inconspicuous, and
the labellum is elongated, with a freely pivotting hinge about
mid-way. Another species (T. huntiana) was known from
Flinders Island, but is now considered to be extinct. |
