Sporadanthus
tasmanicus is a reasonably common native species in wet peaty
vegetation, especially button grass sedgeland. It is a more-or-less typical
member of Restionaceae, with cylindrical stems with several dry
scale-leaves, and terminal inflorescences. The spikelets are reduced
to just two flowers. The
stems are somewhat sinuous. This species can be distinguished from
other sinuous Restionaceae - the stems are more-or-less glaucous (unlike
Empodisma) and are usually larger than
Hypolaena. Also the glaucousness in
Hypolaena comes from tiny white scales, whereas in
Sporodanthus it is from tiny ridges on the stems. |
