In this panel discussion, six scholars working in educational studies in different national contexts will take up what Corbett and Helmer (2017) characterise as “geospatial debates over the proper scaling of educational services, the relationship between schooling and community development, and the question of what constitutes educational equality/equity and quality education”. It is now well understood that educational resources and outcomes are unequally distributed across social, cultural and physical geographies. This has led to an increased focus on issues of educational inequality and equity, some of which has problematized and sought to understand persistent educational challenges in non-metropolitan areas. This panel discussion features an international group of leading multidisciplinary scholars in the field of rural education.

Working from the disciplinary locations of English/literacies education, sociology, rural studies, youth studies, curriculum studies, history and geography, the symposium will offer perspectives on both the educational effects of the current political climate and the ways in which education and rurality are positioned within contemporary policy and practice debates.
