Bridges Out of Poverty is a one-day workshop which helps us understand the challenges faced by poverty and how it shapes the interactions and experiences of a person’s everyday life. This work-shop has been tailored for UTAS staff to equip Academic and Professional staff with the skills and capabilities necessary to provide the best possible experience for our students, through understanding the barriers created by social and economic disadvantage.

People experiencing poverty can often face social exclusion, not due to a lack of capability, but because they do not have important support systems and appropriate role models around them. This can amount to far more than just a lack of financial resources, but also a lack of emotional responses and low aspiration, which may result in inter-generational cases of poverty. This has profound implications for not only the way we teach and research, but how we operate within a state which experiences high levels of social and economic disadvantage.

In this workshop, participants will be introduced to the “hidden rules” and language differences which exist in different economic classes. By gaining an understanding of these class differences, participants will be able to more effectively work with students who may have experienced, or are currently experiencing, social disadvantage or poverty.

Presenter: Nairn Walker
