Electric Visions of Metamatter

Exploring the wondrous world of matter as seen through the movement of electricity, Sean O'Connell opens out the concerns of his current show at MAC (Moonah Art Centre), and past work that has led to it. Touching upon energetic perspectives of reality, violent transfers of force, electrical discharge photography, 16mm high speed motion film, and the excessively craft-ish pre-occupation of contemporary jewellery, the concerns of cold hard matter and energetic flow collide into one another, revealing a vibrant world of possibility within which we are deeply enmeshed.

How do we perceive matter? How do we perceive energy? How do we construct our perceptions of the world into systems of knowledge?

Sean O'Connell undertook his PhD at Sydney College of the Arts under the artist Mikala Dwyer, after a background in contemporary jewellery. He has studied and taught in various universities in Sydney, won several small awards nationally and abroad, has recently moved to rural Tasmania, and makes stuff because he loves it.
