Tasmania is currently experiencing increased investment in its screen industry. The upshot of such investment is the increased potential for Tasmanian-focussed screen production to create visitor interest in Tasmanian destinations, which could link film and television to one of the State’s most economically important industries: tourism.

The purpose of this seminar is to examine and assess online cross-promotional destination marketing strategies for the ABC television series Rosehaven, specifically to examine how pre-existing Tasmanian tourism destinations have been linked in such promotions to the fictional settings of the television series. Using participant observation of real tourist spaces, Dr Blackwould  research is looking to explore how closely the destination marketing materials align with contemporary understandings of motivations for the film or screen tourist, as determined through theoretical scholarship on film or screen tourism. This focus allows a broader examination of the mechanics between promotion, tourism and experiences of screen fandom.
