The Australian excavations at the Early Iron Age settlement of Zagora, on the island of Andros, provide a major contribution to our understanding of life in the Aegean during the ninth and eighth centuries BC. This lecture will set Zagora in the wider history of Andros, and will reveal the rich history of the island throughout antiquity and how it was perceived by the ancients.
Dr Stavros Paspalas was appointed Deputy Director of the Australian Archaeological Institute at Athens in 1996, and from March 2016 he has also held the position of Acting Director. He is a classical archaeologist specialising in the art and archaeology of the Aegean region from the ninth through to the fourth century BC, with particular interests in ancient ceramics and contact between the Greeks and their eastern neighbours. In recent years he has focused his attention on the excavation of the Early Iron Age settlement of Zagora on the island of Andros, while maintaining his involvement in archaeological fieldwork at Torone in the Chalkidike and on the island of Kythera.
