Pots are great – but they’re not art.

Dee Taylor-Graham comes to CAM fresh from her role as Artistic Director of The 15th Australian Ceramics Triennale. Staged in Tasmania for the first time in its 41-year history, the Triennale sought to interrogate the field of contemporary ceramic practice through the lens of its themes, Holding Space Making Place.

In this forum, Dee will share her curatorial vision for the Triennale. She will reflect on the events that took place within PW1 (and around Hobart), consider the journey from National Ceramic Conference for Potters to Triennale and speculate on possible outcomes of the event, whilst discussing her views on ceramics as a medium for contemporary artists, makers, designers and material thinkers.

Dee is a teacher, writer, performer and maker. Her practice is informed by the ideals of relational aesthetics and is driven by an understanding of pots as agents for social exchange. Trained in schools and residencies around Australia and overseas including COFA, SCA, The Jam Factory, Sturt Craft Centre and The New York State School of Ceramics (Alfred), Dee came to Tasmania in 2013 with a vision to start a studio / school of her own.

Waldie’s School for the Ceramic Arts is a pottery / workshop / art school / residency space. Housed in what was once the Channel Folk Museum in Snug, it will nurture a community of ceramic artists from beginners to long-term practitioners; providing opportunities for learning new skills as well as ongoing dialogue and critique.
