Australians very early on grasped a love for all things cinematic, with our first home grown and produced black and white movie etching the now blurring image of a falling Ned Kelly in our national memory. With the onslaught of wars, financial and environmental crises we have continued as a nation to watch and be mesmerised by the world of film. There is a wonderful communal sensitivity to sitting in a semi darkened room, and becoming transfixed by the moving visual, imaginary or factual of other worlds, distant places, times and emotions. My favourite film aims to explore connections between people and film, as well as the range of experience that cinema encapsulates from joy, humour, comfort and intimacy to grief, sadness and sorrow. The exhibition will investigate all things cinema, everything from rolling the ‘jaffas’ down the aisle; the music soundtrack that brings back long hidden memories and the seminal ‘flicks’ that trigger reminders and recollections of our childhood, the teenage years and other significant life moments as we grow older. Even with our high-tech world of immediate gratification screen time, we are still fascinated and drawn to the moving image. My favourite film presents a varied creative interpretation of the imagery that has forged and influenced our personal determinants and, in the process, gives credence to what is real and filmic within our inner scene. The exhibition includes all media, painting, video, photography, drawing, sculpture and installation.
