The Faculty of Law and the Asia Institute are jointly hosting a lunchtime discussion with Nani Zulminarni, an Indonesian change maker and women’s empowerment champion. Nani is the founder and Director of the largest female heads of household organisation in Indonesia- PeKKA Pemberdayaan Perempuan Kepala Keluarga.
The discussion will be opened by Margaret Otlowski, Professor of Law and Pro Vice-Chancellor (Culture and Wellbeing), and facilitated by Cate Sumner, Director of Law & Development Partners and a Senior Adviser on the Australia Indonesia Partnership for Justice 2 (AIPJ2).
This seminar will be a great opportunity to hear about:
- The process of building the PEKKA women’s empowerment civil society organisation – which now works in 20 provinces across Indonesia with over 50,000 members supporting: women’s economic and legal empowerment, lifelong learning, leadership and access to justice.
- The training of thousands of paralegals from PEKKA’s membership to assist women with a range of family law, social protection and violence matters.
- The making of the PEKKA movie directed by Vivian Idris that is being screened at the Breath of Fresh Air Film Festival on Saturday 18 May at 2.30pm – and why making movies changes lives. Check out the trailer online.
- Opportunities which exist under the New Colombo Plan Scholarship to study in Indonesia and work with Civil Society Organisations and AIPJ2 in Indonesia (Including Grace Williams as a recent recipient of a New Colombo Scholarship who will be working with PEKKA during her stay in Indonesia).
