Women’s Legal Empowerment in Indonesia: The PEKKA Experience
The Female-Headed Household Empowerment Program (PEKKA-Pemberdayaan Perempuan Kepala Keluarga), which began in 2001, operates in 19 provinces in Indonesia. PEKKA has benefitted around 20,000 women and approximately 52,000 of their family members by improving their livelihood and well-being. For over 17 years, PEKKA has changed the way women heads of households are considered and the public services they can access for themselves and their children. The presentation will include an introduction to the development of the PEKKA women’s empowerment CSO and its works in 20 provinces across Indonesia. With over 50,000 members, PEKKA supports initiatives aimed at women’s economic empowerment, lifelong learning, women’s leadership, legal empowerment and access to justice.
Speaker:
Nani Zulminarni, the founder and Director of PEKKA, has more than 30 years of experience in women’s empowerment fighting poverty and discrimination from a social, economic and political perspective. Nani graduated from Bogor Agriculture Institute in 1985 and obtained a Masters Degree in Sociology from North Carolina State University USA in 1993. Nani is a member of the International Advisory Group of Musawah, a global network of Muslim Women for Justice and Equality in Islamic Family Law. In 2014, she received the Lotus Leadership Award in the US for her commitment to improving the lives of young women in Asia.
