The United Nations set 17 “Sustainable Development Goals” as a blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. Come along to be led by some of Tasmania’s local experts in deliberating over what needs to happen today to achieve these goals by 2030.

Sustainable Development Goal 12: Responsible Consumption & Production and how we need to respond to waste reduction challenges as a community were the focus of our first Hobart Sustainability in the Pub panel in August earlier this year. We've decided to take Goal 12 to Launceston and keep the conversation live about "Breaking Up with Plastics: Closing the Loop on Waste".

In any given moment, there are 1 million plastic bags in use around the world. Each one has an average lifespan of 12 to 15 minutes before it is discarded. These and other single-use items – plastic cups, water bottles and food packaging – make up 89% of plastic litter identified on the floor of the ocean.

Led in conversation by sustainability champion Associate Professor Fred Gale from the School of Social Sciences UTAS, our panel will talk about the impacts of plastic pollution, and what's happening now at a local level and what else needs to happen to increase resource efficiency - doing more, and better, with less.

On the panel:

  • Kathy Willis, PhD Candidate, School of Social Sciences UTAS
  • Michelle Ogulin, Waste and Environment Officer – Strategy, Launceston City Council + Northern Tasmanian Waste Management Group
  • Dr Joanna Vince, Senior Lecturer - Politics and International Relations Program, School of Social Sciences UTAS

City of Launceston Councillor Janie Finlay will also be joining in with the panel to take part in our closing audience Q&A.

You’re invited to Sustainability in the Pub to discuss, deliberate, drink and decide how to make sure our future is a glass half full not half empty.
