IF YOU WANT TO SEE IT, YOU NEED TO BUILD IT: careers, curation and collecting
Andrew Harper is an artist, arts writer, gallery runner and collector of art and ephemera.
Art practices and careers in the arts are increasingly the focus of Andrew's investigations. Andrew is interested in careers that don't follow standard paths, whilst questioning if there even is a standard path to an art career. Andrew will look at his own meandering career, and also the work of two 'underground' artists from Hobart, Andrew Clifford and Rodney Febey. This talk will look at the curation of a recent exhibition, Dirty Paper, which Andrew was involved with, and how his involvement occurred, but it will also touch on running a gallery space, economics of an art practice, dealing with estates and histories, and the problems of nostalgia.
There is art that doesn't fit and art that gets left out. Not all art exists is galleries: art gets painted on walls, shared in small press and replicated in comics and as the covers of cheap paperback books. Does this kind of art deserve to be ignored, or does it need acknowledgement of some kind/ What does this art and the way it shared tell us about history and culture?
Collecting art the exists in the cracks of contemporary culture reveals different histories of a place and who was dong and making in the place. Andrew Harper has spent years collecting and collating an archive of unruly art that tells another story about Hobart and Tasmania and people who made culture here and who are getting lost in time.
