  • Professor Martha Curley is a leading clinical researcher in nurse implemented therapies for acute respiratory failure and the critically ill paediatric patient.
  • Professor Cynda Rushton is a leader in nursing ethics, with expertise in resilience and palliative care.
  • Professor Marilyn Cruikshank has primary responsibility the Australian National Hand Hygiene Program. She is technical advisor to the World Health Organisation (WHO) on healthcare associated infections, antimicrobial resistance and hand hygiene.

About the speakers

Professor Marilyn Cruikshank

Professor Marilyn Cruikshank is Conjoint Professor of Nursing at UTS and Sydney Children’s Hospital. Dr Cruikshank has had primary responsibility the Australian National Hand Hygiene Program. She is technical advisor to the WHO on healthcare associated infections, antimicrobial resistance and hand hygiene.


Professor Cynda Rushton

Professor Cynda Rushton is the Anne and George L Bunting Professor of Clinical Ethics at Johns Hopkins School of Nursing. Dr Rushton is a leader in nursing ethics, with expertise in resilience and palliative care. Her focus of improving patient care by supporting clinician wellbeing and has author and editor of Moral Resilience: Transforming Moral Suffering in Healthcare


Dr. Martha A. Q. Curley

Dr. Martha A. Q. Curley is the Ruth M. Colket Endowed Chair in Pediatric Nursing at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and Professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. She also holds a joint appointment in Anesthesia and Critical Care Medicine at the University’s Perelman School of Medicine. Her research, funded by NHLBI, NINR and NICHD, has focused on nurse-implemented interventions in pediatric critical care. Over several decades, her studies have illuminated relationship-based care when partnering with parents-of-critically-ill children, supported parent presence during invasive procedures and resuscitation, and have informed the practice of caring for critically-ill pediatric patients with acute respiratory failure. Dr. Curley has also led the development and dissemination of core metrics in the field of pediatrics; for example, the State Behavioral Scale (SBS), the Withdrawal Assessment Tool (WAT-1), individualized numeric rating scale (INRS) and the Braden QD scale.  Dr. Curley is a member of the National Academy of Medicine and a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing.  She received her diploma in nursing from Springfield Hospital School of Nursing, her BS from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, her MSN in acute care pediatrics from Yale School of Nursing and her PhD from Boston College.
