Wednesday 27 April 2022 Unruly bodies, unruly homes: The representation of housing on Australian TV as discipline and ideology. Presented by Dr Donald Reid. Using examples from recent non-scripted Australian programming - The Block (Channel 9), The Living Room (Network 10) and Struggle Street (SBS), Dr Reid re-evaluates the notion that housing representation is disciplinary, and add that it is also strongly ideological, perpetuating an ideal of Australian life unavailable to the populace it aims to represent.
Wednesday 25 May 2022 Public Secrets, Media and Extinction by Associate Professor Katrina Schlunke (University of Sydney/University of Tasmania). This paper will explore the role and imaginary of the many advertisements put in Tasmanian newspapers throughout the 1940s concerning Tasmanian tigers ‘accidentally’ killed or captured.
Wednesday 29 June 2022 The Air Case: A novel approach for making environmental documentary by Andy Terhell, Associate Lecturer in Media at The University of Tasmania’s Media School. Andy's seminar questions the genre of the environmental documentary, which often uses an activist lens to call the audience to action.
Wednesday 27 July 2022 Forever Bali: Surf Tourism and Morning of the Earth by Dr Gemma Blackwood. This paper focuses on the affective spaces of freedom and possibility that were opened up by Albert Falzon’s film Morning of the Earth.
Wednesday 24 August 2022 Lake Pedder: 50 Years Flooded. In this special panel, Media Lecturer Dr Gemma Blackwood speaks with experts from across the University of Tasmania’s School of Creative Arts and Media programme about the the 50th anniversary of the flooding of Lake Pedder and the reverberations of this event in Tasmania and beyond. Featuring panelists Professor Libby Lester, Dr Troy Ruffels, Dr Martin Walch and Liam Meagher.
