Summary:

In the 30th anniversary of the landmark Mabo ruling ASAL2022 (Association for the Study of Australian Literature) will explore the impact of Mabo on Australian literature.

In the 30th anniversary of the landmark Mabo ruling, ASAL2022 will explore the impact of Mabo on Australian literature and literary culture, broadly defined. It will examine the roles that narrative, and other forms of writing, have played in mediating the Mabo legacy in all its complexity and ambiguity.

The Conference opens with a range of workshops and the Opening Reception on the first day. There are a variety of sessions and panels throughout the week, including a special poetry night on Tuesday.

Jeanine Leane will present the Barry Andrews Memorial Address at the Conference Opening Reception on the evening of Monday 4th July. Alice Te Punga Somerville presents the Dorothy Green Lecture on Tuesday, and then award-winning poet Evelyn Araluen will present the Early Career Researcher Lecture on Wednesday. Gail Mabo presents her Keynote Lecture on Thursday, livestreaming from the Eddie Koiki Mabo Memorial Library in Townsville. Uncle Jim Everett – puralia meenamatta will present his Keynote Lecture on Friday. The Conference finishes with the panel “Acknowledging the Legacy of Mabo in Australian Writing”, chaired by Dr Robert Clarke.

Please note that this program may be subject to changes. Should those changes be substantive, attendees will be contacted. The Workshops on Monday are in-person only and require registration with caps on attendance.
