End of Semester 1, 2022 concert series performed by the University's Songwriting, Classical Performance, and Jazz & Popular Music students

Join us at the Hedberg for our end of Semester 1, 2022 concert series.
We are very happy to present our first 'open to the public' student concert series in over two years. Live performance is the life blood of musicians so our students from the Songwriting, Classical Performance, and Jazz & Popular Music streams are excited and eager to play. You are warmly invited to join us and celebrate these vibrant performances.
Tickets are FREE but registrations essential as seating is limited.
From 15th January 2022, anyone coming to our campuses, facilities and events is required to be fully vaccinated or have an exemption. Masks must be worn in indoor public settings, including all university venues, from 12:01am, Tuesday 21 December 2021.

Friday 13 May, 2022 - 1:00pm - Lunchtime Concert: University of Tasmania and Southern Colleges Wind Ensemble The University of Tasmania and Southern Colleges Wind ensemble present a diverse and entertaining program spanning different cultures and genres! From music reflecting Ukraine, Armenia, Ireland and Korea, to music full of heart from Tasmanian Composers Maria Grenfell and Simon Barber, to John Williams thrilling score to Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, this concert truly does have something for everyone! All of the composers featured hail, or spent time living in the Americas, but all have very different cultural stories to tell and the theme of diversity is very strong in this serious yet engaging program. Friday 20 May, 2022 - 7:00pm - Experimental Music Ensemble "527" EME this semester explores the concept of “deep listening” as described by experimental US composer/performer Pauline Oliveros, taking her album “Crone Music” as a starting point, music full of postmodern yearning and anomie woven by the continuum of the accordion. As another global tragedy unfolds in the form of the war on Ukraine following relentlessly from the covid epidemic, themes of Aristotelian interpretation and what it means for the symbols of music mediated through deep listening are realised in diverse original contributions from each of the EME performers, who have chosen once again to respond creatively to the crisis. This is a concert of stark contrasts and deep absorption in questions of hermeneutic dissimilarity, where the concept of a score or performance blueprint is apprehended and used as a window to access other conscious states in works of “5 to 7” minutes duration. Saturday 21 May, 2022 - 5:00pm - University of Tasmania Orchestra The University of Tasmania Orchestra performs large ensemble works spanning nearly two centuries. Bookending this concert are French Romantic period Nonets by Louise Farrenc and Charles Gounod, enclosing Stravinsky’s iconic Octet for winds composed as a French Citizen, exiled from his homeland and a world premiere by 89 year old Tasmanian, Don Kay, who in this work takes a fresh and experimental new direction! Thursday 26 May, 2022 - 7:00pm - Songwriter Showcase The songwriting cohort at the conservatorium are a wonderfully diverse group of musicians who write music across many genres and themes. Each semester, the showcase is an opportunity for us to hear some of the original songs written by our students and to celebrate the completed recording projects undertaken by our final year students. Friday 27 May, 2022 - 6:00pm - Scotty & the Jazz Ninjas An evening of swing fueled music that will have toes tapping and heads bobbing! Scotty & the Jazz Ninjas features seven of Tasmania's finest. This rip-snorting, ragtag bunch of young maestri will be blazing their way through a selection of jazz standards including some well and not so well known selections. Saturday 28 May, 2022 - 1:00pm - Jazz Band 2 and Indie Pop Rock Band This double billed afternoon of music takes you on a journey from Jazz to Pop. Jazz Band 2 This talented sextet featuring the vocals of Maddie Townley, will present a finely crafted set of Jazz standards ranging from Hoagy Carmichael's timeless classic Stardust through to the sultry Afro Blues by Mongo Santamaria. Indie Pop Rock Band Two vocalists, drums, bass and no less than three guitarists, explore their interpretations of indie pop songs featuring the work of artists; Arctic Monkeys, Ball Park Music, and more. Saturday 28 May, 2022 - 7:00pm - Funk & Soul Band, Disciples of Soul and the Southern Gospel Choir Funk and Soul Band This semester the ensemble has focused on unpicking the traditions of funk and soul and how these genres have continued to evolve over time. The students have worked hard to condense 12 weeks-worth of music-making to curate a 30-minute showcase jam-packed with funky and soulful tunes from the 60s through to the 21^st century. The Disciples of Soul The DoS are made up each year from the amazing talent pool of principal study singers taught by Katie Raucher, Mia Palencia and Maria Lurighi. Together with the gospel band, they bring an incredible energy and flare to their unique performances of music from the African American blues, soul and gospel traditions. Tonight they will awe and captivate their audience with tunes by Qunicy Jones, Take 6, Donald Lawrence and Kirk Franklin (of course!). Southern Gospel Choir The SGC is one of Tasmania’s most well-known musical ensembles, having recorded and toured together for over 20 years. COVID notwithstanding, they have been able to continue singing and performing throughout in some form or other! In 2022, Andrew Legg and Steven Ford (USA) negotiated with African American gospel legend Richard Smallwood to begin the lengthy process of recording a ‘retrospective’ album of Smallwood’s lifetime of music, involving 20 choirs from around the world, including our very own SGC. For tonight’s performance, you will hear the first stage of this process, as the choir provides their own unique take on several of Smallwood’s stunning tunes, including Anthem of Praise and the now famous Total Praise.
