The President and Council of The Royal Society of Tasmania warmly invite members and friends to enjoy an engaging talk titled '“Shearwater Stories: Histories of Tasmania and the Arctic, c.1800-1860” by Dr Annaliese Jacobs-Claydon. The talk will be followed by the 2023 Christmas Dinner.

SpeakerHeadshot of Annalise

Dr Annaliese Jacobs-Claydon is an Adjunct Researcher in the Dept of History and Classics at the University of Tasmania. Her first book, Arctic Circles and Imperial Knowledge: The Franklin Family, Indigenous Intermediaries, and the Politics of Truth will be published by Bloomsbury Academic in early 2024.

Annaliese will look at how Arctic stories were woven into Tasmanian history, and were used to make sense of Tasmanian’s pasts and imagined futures. Indigenous people and networks of trade are central to these stories, connecting the Bering and Bass Straits in surprising ways. These polar perspectives may help us understand the living legacies of Tasmania’s colonial history, including changing polar regions many of us will never see.

Christmas Dinner

The lecture will be followed by a two-course meal including a vegetarian option and a ‘welcome drink’ , which is included in the ticket price. Drinks will also be available for purchase from the bar.

Please register via the form on the Royal Society of Tasmania website by Friday 1st December
