Summary:

Australian Institute of Physics Public Lecture

Presenter(s):

  • Professor Michael Bailes, Swinburne University

In this talk, Professor Bailes will take the audience on a virtual tour of the Einstein's universe and what we've learned about it using neutron stars and black holes with some of the most powerful telescopes in the world.

Professor Matthew Bailes is the Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Gravitational Wave Dsicovery and won the 2023 Shaw Prize (a precursor to the Nobel Prize) for Astronomy for the discovery of Fast Radio Bursts, mysterious radio flashes that hit the Earth many thousands of times per day.  He is Professor at Swinburne University of Technology where he founded the Centre for Astrophysics and Supercomputing.  A radio astronomer by training, he uses massive telescopes and gravitational wave detectors to explore many aspects of relativistic gravity.

All welcome!

Hosted by the Australian Institute of Physics Tasmanian Branch.
