Summary:

Join Dr Turnock for the 2023 Cobbold Memorial Lecture and consider how we can enable Tasmanians to feel healthier.

Tasmanians are living longer lives than before. In fact, the average life expectancy of a Tasmanian has increased by two years in the last decade. Despite the longevity, many residents of the Apple Isle don’t identify as ‘healthy’, with ABS data indicating that only half of Tasmanian’s consider themselves to be in excellent or very good health.

This paradox suggests that there is more to wellness than meets the eye. Other than apples, there are many determinants preventing us from accessing the care and services we need.

Medical Director of General Practice & Primary Care in the Tasmanian Department of Health, Dr Allison Turnock, says that our health barriers call for innovative systemic solutions and a patient-centred approach that can adapt to the health needs of our communities, all within the confines of limited resources. But what does this look like for Tasmania?

Register now to discover why keeping the doctor away may not be the name of the game.

Dr Allison Turnock

Dr Turnock is a University of Tasmania medical graduate, who completed part of her training at the North-West Rural Clinical School in Burnie.

As a junior doctor, she was a participant of the pre-vocational general practice placement program and an academic GP registrar. Allison is now a specialist with dual Fellowships in both General Practice and Medical Administration.

Initially working in clinical general practice and medical education (including introducing the Rural Application and Aboriginal Entry Application Processes while working at the University of Tasmania), Allison moved to work in the public service to grow the Tasmanian Rural Generalist Pathway and later became the Medical Director, General Practice and Primary Care at the Department of Health in Tasmania.

She was a member of the Primary Health Reform Steering Group that developed Australia’s Primary Health Care 10 Year Plan, and is delighted that Tasmania has a Long-Term Plan that focuses on providing the right care, in the right place, at the right time; and that the first action is strengthening relationships with primary care.

The Arthur Cobbold Legacy

Arthur Cobbold was a Foundation Professor of Physiology at the University. He played a pivotal role in the School’s development and success, serving as Dean of School for a record 13 years. He is remembered by his students and peers as an outstanding teacher, highly competent researcher, excellent administrator, and a superb raconteur.

In recognition of the legacy of Arthur Cobbold, his wife and the University established an annual public lecture to provide an opportunity for Tasmanians to hear from people of distinction in the field of medicine.
