Ambassador of Japan meets Vice-Chancellor

In July 2019, His Excellency Mr Reiichiro Takahashi , Ambassador of Japan visited the University of Tasmania.

His Excellency was received by Vice-Chancellor Professor Rufus Black. His Excellency was hosted at the Sandy Bay campus and accompanied by wife, Mrs Masako Takahashi, Consul-General Kazuyoshi Matsunaga, Mr Kazuki Nakamura, Second Secretary, Embassy of Japan, Ms Kim Clifford, Honorary Consul for Japan and Ms Deanna Turnbull from Department of Premier and Cabinet.

As island nations, Tasmania and Japan share common interests in maritime and marine industries and studies with the relationship built over 50 years ago around the tuna industry. Japan, like Tasmania, faces challenges with an ageing population and discussions were held for possible opportunities in health and dementia research. Japan is also home to two sister cities; Hobart City established a sister city relationship with Yaizu in 1977 and later in 1982, Clarence City also entered into a sister city relationship with Akkeshi.
