Swiss Ambassador discusses opportunities in polar science

The Ambassador of Switzerland, His Excellency Mr Pedro Zwahlen visited the University of Tasmania, Sandy Bay Campus, with his Science, Technology and Education Advisor, Mr Sébastien Monnet and the Honorary Consul for Switzerland, Professor Margaret Otlowski.

His Excellency was hosted by Professor Chris Carter, Interim Executive Director, Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies, Ms Sara Franz, Director, Global Engagement and Mr Cameron Parsons, Manager, Global Partnerships.  This is the second visit of the Ambassador to the University, after his recent tour of Tasmania in October 2018.

His Excellency had meetings to discuss Swiss scholarship programs, discussions on potential collaboration between Swiss institutions with the University of Tasmania in polar sciences, and toured facilities at the Institute of Marine and Antarctic Studies.  In the evening, His Excellency hosted a seminar and reception at the Institute of Marine and Antarctic Studies, co-hosted with the Australian Antarctic Division. In 2020, Hobart will host the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) Open Sciences Conference, last held in Davos Switzerland in 2018. A significant delegation of Swiss scientists will visit Hobart, creating further opportunities for engagement and collaboration.
