Town & Gown

The Town & Gown procession is a special feature of the December graduation round.

A town and gown procession allows for the two distinct communities in a university town, the "town" being the non-academic population and the "gown" the University community, to join to celebrate the achievements of the regions graduates.

The 2019 Town & Gown processions will be held on:

  • Burnie: Tuesday, 10 December - 2.30pm
  • Launceston: Saturday, 14 December - 10.15am
  • Hobart: Tuesday, 17 December - 10.15am

If you are participating in a Town and Gown procession please review information below.

  • The Town & Gown procession of graduands and staff through city streets is a special feature of the graduation ceremony in Burnie.
  • The procession is held before the 3.00pm ceremony, and all candidates graduating in Burnie are invited to participate.
  • Please assemble at the Burnie Council Chambers, Wilson Street, at 2.00pm. Arrival by 1.30pm is strongly recommended. There will be ushers to assist and direct you.
  • If you are an academic participating in the Town & Gown procession, please assemble at the Burnie Council Chambers.
  • From 2.00pm to 2.25pm graduands and staff will be briefed and assembled in order for the processsion by University staff.
  • At 2.30pm the procession, with police escort and band, will head North from the Burnie Council Chambers on Wilson Street, turning left onto Cattley Street, right onto Alexander Street and then turning left at High Street into the Civic Centre Courtyard arriving at the Burnie Arts and Function Centre.
  • Once you are seated in the Burnie Arts and Function Centre, there will be a brief rehearsal by University staff.
  • If you choose not to take part in the procession, please be seated at the Burnie Arts and Function Centre by 2.30pm.
  • If the weather is inclement, check the Graduation website or the University of Tasmania Graduation Facebook page to find out if the event has been cancelled. If the procession has been cancelled proceed directly to the Burnie Arts and Function Centre and be seated by 2.30pm.
  • The Town & Gown procession of graduands and staff through city streets is a special feature of the December graduations in Launceston.
  • The procession is held before the Saturday 11.00am ceremony only, but all candidates graduating in Launceston are invited to participate.
  • If your ceremony is at 11.00am please proceed to Civic Square before 9.30am. Arrival by 9.15am is strongly recommended.There will be ushers to assist and direct you.
  • If you are not participating in the 11.00am ceremony but you wish to take part in the procession, please proceed to Civic Square, before 9.45am. You will process behind the 11.00am graduands and will be dismissed at the City Park.
  • If you are an academic participating in the Town & Gown procession, please please proceed to Civic Square.
  • From 9:45am to 10.10am graduands and staff will be briefed and assembled in order for the procession by University staff.
  • At 10:15 am the procession, with police escort and band, will depart from Civic Square, moving south along St John Street, east along Brisbane Street, and then north along Tamar Street, arriving at the Albert Hall at 10.30am.
  • If you choose not to take part in the procession you must be seated in the Albert Hall by 10:30am.
  • If the weather is inclement, check the Graduation website or the University of Tasmania Graduation Facebook page to find out if the event has been cancelled. If the procession has been cancelled proceed directly to the Albert Hall and be seated by 10.30am.
  • The Town & Gown procession of graduands and staff through city streets is a special feature of the December graduations in Hobart.
  • The procession is held before the Tuesday 11.00am ceremony only, but all candidates graduating in Hobart are invited to participate.
  • If your ceremony is at 11.00am please assemble at the IMAS Waterfront Building before 9.30am. Arrival by 9.15am is strongly recommended. There will be ushers to assist and direct you.
  • If you are not participating in the 11.00am ceremony but you wish to take part in the procession, assemble at the IMAS Waterfront Building before 9.45am. You will process behind the 11.00am graduands and will be dismissed at the Federation Concert Hall.
  • If you are an academic participating in the Town & Gown procession, please assemble at the IMAS Waterfront Building.
  • From 9:45am to 10.10am graduands and staff will be briefed and assembled in order for the procession by University staff.
  • At 10.15am the procession, with police escort and band, will move from IMAS, then proceed along Morrison Street, turning right at the Elizabeth Street intersection, onto Franklin Wharf and then turning left towards Constitution Dock. The procession will then proceed over Victoria Dock Bridge, turning left onto Hunter Street, crossing Davey Street, arriving at the Federation Concert Hall at 10.30am.
  • If you choose not to take part in the procession please be seated at the Federation Concert Hall by 10.30am.
  • If the weather is inclement, check the Graduation website or the University of Tasmania Graduation Facebook page to find out if the event has been cancelled. If the procession has been cancelled proceed directly to the Federation Concert Hall and be seated by 10.30am.
