Diploma in Languages (DipLang)

Course details (R2A)


1 The Faculty of Arts (hereinafter called the Faculty) may accept as a candidate for the award of Diploma in Languages a person who has passed the first year at University level in the language which the applicant wishes to study, or has achieved a proficiency in the language deemed equivalent by the head of school. In these specifications the dean includes a delegate of the dean.
2 Candidates for the award shall complete the diploma requirements, as hereinafter prescribed, in not less than one year of full-time study (or its equivalent) and not more than three years from the time of first enrolment, including the year of passing the first unit claimed to count towards the diploma.

Course structure

3[i] To qualify for the diploma, the candidate shall obtain not less than 100%, provided that:
(a) not more than 37.5% are from units in Group 2.
(b) not less than 50% are from units in Group 3.
[ii] The units which may be included in the diploma shall, unless otherwise approved by dean, be in accordance with the accompanying Schedule.
[iii] Where two or more units of the same name or content are offered within the University, only one may be counted towards the degree.
[iv] In every case the candidate’s choice of units and the order in which they are taken shall be subject to approval by the dean in accordance with the requirements of paragraph 3.

Credit for previous studies

4 Passes in subjects or units in other courses (completed or otherwise) in this University or another approved tertiary institution (or other approved professional examining body) may be credited towards the diploma, provided that the Faculty may specify what more a candidate so credited shall be required to do to qualify for the diploma. The Faculty may permit candidates to count towards the diploma, units completed at another approved institution, subject to the approval of the dean.


5 The Faculty may from time to time make amendments to the Schedule to these specifications.
6 These specifications shall take effect on 1 January 2000 and shall apply to all candidates for the diploma, including those enrolling for the first time in that year and those enrolled subsequently.
7 Candidates who have passed in units towards the Associate Diploma of Modern Languages under the specifications in force prior to 1 January 1999 will be entitled to transfer to the Diploma in Languages with full equivalent credit, or to graduate in accordance with those associate diploma specifications operating at the time of their admission to candidature.
8 The approved abbreviation for the Diploma in Languages shall be DipLang.

Note: Should any difficulty arise for a candidate previously enrolled because of any difference between course requirements and units offered under these specifications and those previously in force, the Faculty shall ensure that the candidate is not materially disadvantaged by these specifications.
