Exercise and Sport Science Community Program

Statewide Sports Science Services - Strengthening Sport and Health in Tasmania

About the Program

The ‘Statewide Sports Science Services - Strengthening Sport and Health in Tasmania’ program has been established as a result of joint funding from the University of Tasmania and the Tasmania Community Fund Grant Scheme. The Tasmanian Community Fund was established in 1999 to provide grants for not-for-profit organisation, partially to distribute an annual appropriation of funds to the community through grants. Their vision is to help build vibrant Tasmanian communities that are capable and resilient in shaping their own future. The Tasmanian Community Fund invest in and strengthening Tasmanian Communities through grants to organisations to help fulfill this vision.

Exercise and Sport Science staff here in the School of Health Sciences identified that there is strong and continued demand for well-delivered, community-focused holistic sports science servicing and education throughout Tasmania. Currently sport science services are directed through institutions for elite level athletes, however the demand and scope to facilitate community-focused sport sciences services are not being met.

This program will substantially expand the high-quality sports science and sports nutrition services and education currently being provided to the Tasmanian community, with a particular focus on being a mobile service, taking the services available to isolated Tasmanian communities. The services will provide schools, recreational sporting community and sub-professional athletes access to expertly delivered sport science and strength and conditioning services that aim to improve the health, well-being and performance outcomes for a wide-range of Tasmanians.

  • Group and individual fitness testing
  • Specialist fitness coaching and monitoring
  • Nutritional education
  • Sports science education modules that will contribute to improved fitness, health and knowledge of the participants
