Marking Discussion Contributions

When marking a Discussion Topic, it is possible to provide students with an overall mark and feedback for the Topic as a whole.

Students are able to view their grade and feedback from the Grades Tool. This guide shows the steps for viewing and scoring, and providing feedback on student contributions to a Discussion.


The Discussion List page

  • Grid view - 1Access the Discussion List page by pulling down the Communication menu and selecting Discussions.
    • This will give you a list of all your Forums and associated topics within these Forums.

The Discussion Topic page

  • Marking Discussion 1An assessable Discussion topic will have a key icon next to it.
  • Click on the Action arrow to the right of the thread you wish to mark
  • Select Assess Topic from the drop-down menu

Marking a student's Topic in a Rubric

  • Marking Discussion 3If using a Rubric, Scroll down to read the student’s posts
    • Tip: You can choose how to sort the posts, and how many you wish to display within the same page
  • Scroll up and enter a Topic Score
  • Type in some useful, constructive feedback for the student on their posts, with reference to the assessment criteria and/or rubric standards
  • Click on the Save and close button when finished.

Marking a student's Topic Without a Rubric

  • Marking Discussion without rubric Read the student’s posts
    • Tip: You can choose how to sort the posts, and how many you wish to display within the same page
  • Enter a Topic Score
  • Type in some useful, constructive feedback for the student on their posts, with reference to the assessment criteria and/or rubric standards
  • Scroll Up and press Publish Score on Save if you want to release the grade immediately, otherwise it will be in a draft state
  • Click on the Save and close button when finished.

Publishing student scores

  • Marking Discussion 4When you are finished marking all the students, click save at the bottom of the list.
  • Click on the Publish All Scores to Grades button (at the top of the page)
    • Tip: This will release the grade and feedback to the students in Grades (they cannot see their result from within Discussions)
  • Click on the Save and close button (at the bottom of the page) when finished
