Five University of Tasmania students have been able to relocate to pursue their dream degrees thanks to a generous relocation scholarship program.
The George Alexander Foundation Relocation and Living Support Scholarships, made possible through the support of independent Australian philanthropic group the George Alexander Foundation, were presented to the students recently by the foundation’s CEO, Craig Connelly.
It is my pleasure to represent the George Alexander Foundation in awarding these scholarships and supporting institutions like the University of Tasmania, because the young people in the room today are genuinely our future.
The 2017 recipients are Floyd Imber (Bachelor of Engineering), Abigail Piscioneri, (Bachelor of Science Catalyst Program), Joshua Downey (Bachelor of Business and Laws), Emma Dunham, (Bachelor of Pharmacy) and Emmeline Van Beek (Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery).
Valued at $24,000 each, the scholarships have enabled the students to relocate from areas such as the North-West Coast, East Coast and southern Midlands.
Paid over the course of a degree, the scholarships also provide much-needed financial support and enable the recipients to continue the community work and extra-curricular endeavours they already have a demonstrated passion for.
The foundation, established in 1972 by George Alexander AM, places particular value on helping talented young people from rural and remote areas to overcome barriers to education and achieve their potential.
Living in Burnie I didn’t know how I’d practically be able to go to University to study law, as the degree is based in Hobart. I thought about studying part-time, but thanks to this scholarship I’ve been able to move to Hobart and start studying full-time.
“I have also used the financial support to represent the University of Tasmania at the Unigames, where our hockey team earned second place, and to apply for a six-week internship with KPMG, and am also planning to travel in the summer.”
Since 2013, 25 University of Tasmania students have benefitted from the George Alexander Foundation’s generosity.
