The University of Tasmania has climbed to 313 from 370 in the recent QS World University Rankings.
It is usually accepted that there are 20,000 universities globally and the University of Tasmania now ranks at 313th according to QS, 292nd in the Academic Ranking of World Universities and 317th under the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Peter Rathjen said Tasmanians should be proud of
their university.
“Tasmania has only one
university, which means we have a uniquely close relationship with our community,
and it means we have an obligation to be a great university,” Professor Rathjen
said.
These latest rankings results further confirm that Tasmania, quite literally, has a University which is among the best in the world and this in turn allows our students to stand proud in a global labour marketplace which is increasingly competitive.
Professor Rathjen said the substantial increase in QS this year was part of a sustained rise in the global rankings over the past five to six years as the University focused on globally impactful research.
This sustained rise has come as we balance our focus on research excellence with our commitment to teaching excellence – two central elements of our mission that will deliver the innovation and the human capital our state needs to grow and prosper in the future, he said.
The QS World University Rankings
consider academic reputation, employer reputation, citations, and faculty and
student ratios in formulating its list.
Differing methodologies across differing ranking systems can produce a range of results, and often see universities move up and down from year to year and system to system. While imperfect, rankings play an important role in an increasingly competitive global tertiary education market.
