Not everyone goes directly from high school to university. Our students come from a variety of places and life situations. Starting or resuming study is always exciting, but can also be daunting for students.
At the University of Tasmania we’ll help you gain the skills you need to pursue a university degree. We offer a range of support programs and pathways, as well as short foundation programs, to assist in the transition to university study.
University Preparation Program
Designed to support students to develop the academic skills and confidence to undertake university study successfully. If you don’t meet the entry requirements for your chosen course, the UPP can provide you with an alternative entry pathway into university.
If you are commencing study at university and want to develop the essential skills required for independent learning and success at University, Unistart is for you. Unistart introduces you to the expectations of the academic environment and skills needed including critical thinking, critical reading and academic writing skills.
Our range of Diplomas are a 1-year (full-time) qualification that provide you with an alternative pathway into a bachelor program or a short, sharp qualification that aligns with your career and life goals.
A diploma will equip you with sound practical skills and confidence to start or continue your career, or enter into your chosen bachelor degree.
Diploma of University Studies
By completing this course, student may have guaranteed entry into a specified bachelor degree (dependent on specialisation). Students will also meet the University’s General Entry Requirements, so may have options to enter other bachelor degrees. Specialisations are offered in: Arts, Business, Education, Engineering, Health, Health Science, ICT and Science.
Diploma of Applied Business
Designed to provide you with a shorter and more supported learning journey at university, this qualification is a nested program that forms the first year of the Associate Degree in Applied Business. A study option developed with flexibility and accessibility in mind.
Diploma of Dementia Care
With a specific focus on dementia, this course is available to careers, health professionals and anyone with an interest in learning more about dementia. Completion of this course may lead to further study in an associate or bachelor degree.
Graduation from a 2-year (full-time) associate degree can provide students with a direct pathway into university study with up to two years credit into a specified bachelor degree. This means you can complete your bachelor degree without needed to study for longer than necessary.
Associate Degree in Applied Business
This course acts as a stepping stone for future leaders and managers, with graduates having the relevant knowledge and skills to pursue a successful business career. Successful completion of this associate degree may provide up to two years full credit into the Bachelor of Business Administration.
Associate Degree in Sport, Recreation and Leisure
Developed in consultation with Tasmanian industry, this course focus on the management, planning and business of sport, recreation and leisure, and is suitable for those already working in industry or looking to start.
Associate Degree in Tourism and Events
This course focuses on the management, promotion and business of tourism and event organisations, and gives students the opportunity to learn directly from Tasmania’s leading tourism and event practitioners.
Associate Degree in Health and Community Support
This course is suited to school leavers pursuing a career in health, social or community service sectors or those seeking an alternative carer choice in health, disability, mental health, aged care or community services.
Associate Degree in Applied Science (Aquaculture)
TThroughout this course, students get the opportunity to learn directly from Tasmania’s local aquaculture experts about core applied science theory and specialist aquaculture subjects, including aquatic health, aquatic biology and aquatic chemistry.
Associate Degree in Applied Science (Fermentation Science and Separation Processes)
This course offers you the opportunity to learn about some of Tasmania’s up-and-coming, innovative industries within the food and beverage sector (beer, cider, wine, whiskey, gin, cheese and other fermented foods) and premium bio-industries (seaweed-based fertilisers, poppies, biodiesel and much more).
Associate Degree in Applied Technologies (Cyber Security)
This course has been specifically designed to create fully-fledged cyber security technologists. Taught by industry, the course combines cores study areas of IT, including concepts and procedures for cyber security computer networks, security management and ethical hacking, with a capstone project.
Associate Degree in Agribusiness
Developed in consultation with Tasmanian industry, this course blends business studies in management, finance, marketing and planning with technical skills in agriculture. Successful completion of this course may provide up to two years full credit into the Bachelor of Applied Science (Agriculture and Business).
Associate Degree in Education Support
This course provides and education qualification for Teacher Aides/School Support Officers/Home Schooling parents, or a pathway into a Bachelor of Education.
