About the research project
Who gets to work in Antarctica? Although a range of people now live and work on the continent, the Australian Antarctic Program (AAP) does not reflect the wider societies that it represents. The lack of diversity in the AAP can be seen across a range of features of social identity including gender, age, race, ethnicity, sexuality, and ability). This project seeks to understand how the AAP can promote and enhance Antarctic work opportunities for people in historically excluded groups (e.g., women, people of colour, LGBTIQA+ communities, etc.) through its recruitment imagery and selection processes. When people in historically excluded groups can see themselves in the job, they are more likely to be open to new work experiences and modify previously held beliefs and attitudes. This project will use a mixed methods approach to develop an evidence base for the AAP to connect with a largely untapped pool of talent with diverse experiences and ideas, as future expeditioners. In this project, you will have an unprecedented opportunity to deliver new knowledge about expeditioner recruitment and retention for the AAP, with comparative lessons for other National Antarctic Programs. You will also have access to a collaborative, multi-disciplinary network of world class researchers and innovators in remote and extreme environments.
Applicants will be considered for a Research Training Program (RTP) scholarship or Tasmania Graduate Research Scholarship (TGRS) which, if successful provides:
- a living allowance stipend of $28,854 per annum (2022 rate, indexed annually) for 3.5 years
- a relocation allowance of up to $2,000
- a tuition fees offset covering the cost of tuition fees for up to four years (domestic applicants only)
If successful, international applicants will receive a University of Tasmania Fees Offset for up to four years.

Applicants should review the Higher Degree by Research minimum entry requirements and the following additional eligibility criteria specific to this project:
- Applicants must already have or been awarded a First Class Honours degree or hold equivalent qualifications or relevant research experience in social sciences with an interest or experience in working across multiple disciplines
Applicants from the following disciplines are encouraged to apply:
- Media/Cultural Studies
- Gender Studies
This project is supported for on-campus study only.
The project is competitively assessed and awarded. Selection is based on academic merit and suitability to the project as determined by the College.
Additional essential selection criteria specific to this project:
- Demonstrated capacity in critical thinking
- Background or interest in subject areas relevant to the project (i.e. Antarctic Studies)
- Qualitative research skills
