About the research project
Technological advancements in areas such as autonomous vehicles and remote sensing technology present potentially radical changes to the scientific, research, engineering and technological (RSET) work in done in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean (ASO). Some will open up new forms of work, including research and science activities that were not previously possible. Others will create new possibilities for the ways in which work is done, such as by enabling collection of data using remote controlled technology.
These developments have implications for the employment experience of conducting RSET-related work in Antarctic and the Southern Ocean when they change ways of working and what this kind of work involves. Arguably the greatest impact will be the separation of doing RSET work related to Antarctica and the Southern Ocean from the performance of that work in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean, radically changing what people can expect and experience when undertaking ASO-related work.
Research questions could include, but not be limited to:
- What impact is technological change having on work and employment experiences for people conducting RSET work in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean?
- How will technological advances change the employment experience of the workforce conducting science, research, engineering or technology work in Antarctic and the Southern Ocean in the future?
- How will technological change affect the expectations people have about working in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean?
Applicants will be considered for a Research Training Program (RTP) scholarship or Tasmania Graduate Research Scholarship (TGRS) which, if successful, provides:
- a living allowance stipend of $28,597 per annum (2021 rate, indexed annually) for 3.5 years
- a relocation allowance of up to $2,000
- a tuition fees offset covering the cost of tuition fees for up to four years (domestic applicants only)
If successful, international applicants will receive a University of Tasmania Fees Offset for up to four years.

The project is open to domestic (Australian and New Zealand) and international applicants who are already in Australia (onshore) at the time of submitting their application.
Due to current Australian COVID-19 travel restrictions the University cannot accept applications from international applicants who are currently overseas.
Applicants should review the Higher Degree by Research minimum entry requirements.
The project is competitively assessed and awarded. Selection is based on academic merit and suitability to the project as determined by the College.
Additional essential selection criteria specific to this project:
- Prior postgraduate research study in relevant discipline (including Human Resource Management or Sociology)
Additional desirable selection criteria specific to this project:
- Previous research or professional work related to conducting research, science, engineering or technological work
