About the research project
The Tasmanian Public Health Research and Action Coalition (Tas-PHRAC) consists of around 25 researchers, policymakers, and practitioners from the University of Tasmania (Menzies Institute for Medical Research) and the Tasmanian Department of Health, Public Health Services (PHS). Tas-PHRAC is funded by PHS to build new evidence across four collaboratively identified priority local public health issues: nutrition, physical activity, smoking, and air quality. Researchers and policymakers work together to identify priorities and come together frequently to support interpretation and dissemination of findings.
The aim of this PhD project is to evaluate the impact of this collaborative research-policy partnership. It will use a range of methodologies, including case studies, interviews, surveys, and documentation reviews (e.g., meeting minutes, policies, funding submissions) to better understand the factors that contribute to or hinder successful collaboration, support translation of findings into policy and practice, and maximise research impact. The findings will provide insights and key learnings into barriers and enablers to successful research-policy partnerships and will generate recommendations to enhance future collaborative efforts in public health.
Applicants will be considered for a Research Training Program (RTP) scholarship or Tasmania Graduate Research Scholarship (TGRS) which, if successful, provides:
- a living allowance stipend of $28,597 per annum (2021 rate, indexed annually) for 3.5 years
- a relocation allowance of up to $2,000
- a tuition fees offset covering the cost of tuition fees for up to four years (domestic applicants only)
If successful, international applicants will receive a University of Tasmania Fees Offset for up to four years.

The project is open to domestic (Australian and New Zealand) and international applicants who are already in Australia (onshore) at the time of submitting their application.
Due to current Australian COVID-19 travel restrictions the University cannot accept applications from international applicants who are currently overseas.

The project is competitively assessed and awarded. Selection is based on academic merit and suitability to the project as determined by the College.
