What do I have to complete to be awarded a HDR?

All candidates enrolled in a Higher Degree by Research must submit a thesis for examination in fulfilment of the award for which they are enrolled.

A degree of Doctor of Philosophy is awarded on the basis of a thesis prepared under supervision that makes an original, significant and extensive contribution to knowledge and understanding in the relevant field of study. Students are required to produce a thesis of no more than 100,000 words (Exegesis = 20,000-50,000), with the research representing a significant new contribution to the discipline.

The degree of Master of Research is awarded on the basis of a thesis prepared under supervision that presents the results of original research in a scholarship form demonstrating the Candidate’s knowledge of the research topic and the discipline/s it embraces. Students are required to produce a thesis of no more than 50,000 words (exegesis = 10,000-20,000), that demonstrates their capacity for critical analysis and application of specialist knowledge.

A degree of Professional Doctorate is awarded on the basis of a combination of:

  • A thesis of up to 80,000 words prepared under supervision that makes an original, significant and extensive contribution to knowledge and understanding in the relevant field of study in the context of professional practice; and
  • The completion of degree specific coursework as approved by Academic Senate and set out in the applicable University course and unit handbook.
