Room IC206 , Architecture & Design
Greg Nolan is a Professor at the University of Tasmania's School of Architecture and Design in its School of Technology, Environment and Design. He is also the Director of the University's Centre for Sustainable Architecture with Wood, a multidisciplinary research and development group that aspires to be a national leader in sustainable architectural design, building and applications with wood.
Since 1994, Greg has been involved with teaching in Architecture and Design and with research, development and extension aimed at improving the use of wood and timber products in sustainable building, and the recovery of wood products from the available resource, particularly Australia's plantation hardwoods. In this, he works closely with the building design professions and the timber production industry. He has published widely on these topics through books, articles, manuals, guides and conference publications.
Biography
Greg Nolan is a registered architect, an active researcher and experienced research manager. He is active teaching into the Discipline’s Architecture program, particularly in the technical aspects of design and construction. Prior to joining the University, Greg had a rich history of working in architecture and building practice, and theatre. He worked in architectural practice in the early 1990s and gained his architectural registration in Tasmania with Hobart firm Lawrence H. Howroyd & Associates. In the late 1980's, he worked as a Project Manager & System Development Officer in Australian Stratacore Holdings Ltd, a specialist prefabricated building company, while in the early 1980s he was Theatre Designer and Production Manager for the Riverina Theatre Company, and a renovation carpenter.

Expertise
Greg is an active and successful collaborative researcher, working closely with research groups across disciplines and with major organisations in the timber production, building and building design sectors nationally and internationally. His primary expertise is in the production of timber and wood products and their use in building design. This encompasses technical and design skill in wood products in sustainable development; hardwood processing, particularly the recovery of solid wood products from plantation hardwoods; and timber in building design, particularly in non-residential construction.
Being a practising architect and experienced researcher, working in timber manufacture, Greg probably has a unique view of the value chain, interests and concerns that extends from the forest to the built environment and from the forester to the building design professional.
Research Themes
Greg's research aligns with two of the University's research themes: Environment, Resources and Sustainability, and Creativity, Culture and Society. His research interests in the theme of Environment, Resources and Sustainability align to the recovery of wood products from the available resource, particularly Australia's plantation hardwoods. Greg's work in material recovery has focused on both advance value recovery from the standing resource, through improved systems and processes, and multi-disciplinary aspects of forestry for economic product recovery. His research interests in the theme of Creativity, Culture and Society align to improving both the use of wood and timber products in sustainable building. This includes work on the thermal performance of timber building and the increased development and adoption of advance timber prefabrication systems.

- Description
- Pine third logs from clear fell, thinning logs, and the corewood of larger logs comprise mainly juvenile fibre and are therefore not typically processed for structural timber framing products. The limiting factor is often board instability in production and in-service compared with market expectations. However, alternative log and fibre sources become important in a market when availability of traditional sawlogs limits production volumes. Using Western Australian pine product, this scalable project will provide a capture critical performance data as a foundation for further research and development using this alternative fibre supply to meet market demand for timber construction and EWP feedstock.

- Description
- Food and wood products are areas of strategic growth for Tasmania and regional Australia, contributing $1.6 billion and $615 million, respectively, to the annual Tasmanian economy. A thriving and sustainable sector requires continued innovation to locally value-add and diversify products and markets. Innovation is underpinned by research strengths and a workforce sector connected to advances in technology and trained graduates. The University of Tasmania (UTas) is committed, through its strategic plan, to deliver impactful research to help Tasmania prosper, and to have influence nationally and globally. Through collaborations, this three-year project will increase research and development activity at UTas to support value-adding in niche food and wood products in regional areas. The delivery of the project will build cross-disciplinary, integrated collaborations at UTas, and together with long-term external partnerships and collaborations, will maximise the benefits of interdisciplinary approaches to delivering impactful research for the regions

- This briefing paper outlines a project to extend the Hermal group / CLTP Tasmania's (CLTP) capacity torecover, process and grade boards milled from predominantly fibre-grown Tasmanian plantation Shininggum (E.Niten) for use in market-ready mass timber products. This Tasmanian grown plantationresources has not previously been dried and graded on a commercial scale for mass timber elements. With a large and reliable plantation-based log supply and potentially voracious construction market forcross laminated timber (CLT) and glue laminated timber (GLT) products, CLTP is seeking to increase itstotal processing efficiency and quality, and product potentials with its existing and newly installed plantand facilities.

- Description
- Development of advanced veneer and other products from coconut wood to enhance livelihoods in South Pacific communities: This recently completed, four-year CocoVeneer project investigated the potential to establish the technology necessary to underpin a sustainable coconut veneering industry. The core of this was determining means to successfully peel senile coconut stems into veneer suitable for both appearance and structural applications using spindleless lathe techniques. In support of this central program additional work focused on coconut harvesting, community estate planning, and uses for coconut harvesting and processing residues. The presentation will show the lathe in operation and the results of material assessment and product development, and indicate the potential to use coconut residues as a base for composting and energy production.

- Description
- This project involves stakeholder consultation, development and submission of a FWPA research and development investment plan with associated industry adoption and technology transfer strategy in support of hardwood products: their performance, yield and market opportunity. The review encompasses all current commercial hardwood species or classes as well as current and forecast market applications over the coming decade. Areas of focus include: log quality and characteristics; processing systems and performance; utilisation of by-products; market demands and drivers. The investment plan includes a critical evaluation of previous research in this area, an assessment of industry adoption and quantifiable benefits delivered from projects completed to date and a SWOT analysis of: industry and research provider capacities; current research underway; and future market opportunities. The final five year plan should prioritise future industry needs and indicative resource allocations (including by species and market) as well as map and identify proposed roles and responsibilities of individual companies, industry associations, research consortia and FWPA in delivering the stated objectives of the research program.

- Description
- The proposed project aligns with initiatives led by the National Centre for Future Forestry Industries (NCFFI -‐UTas) in the optimisation of extended forestry value chains. Specifically this project aims to improve the recovery, quality and value of sawn hardwoods by deploying advanced information sensing and modeling technology to air-‐dry sawn boards to Fibre Saturation Point (FSP). This is the critical stage in successful hardwood drying, and a vital segment of the broader forestry value chain. This is a three-‐stage project support by four activity streams. The three stages are 1). Intensive research into sensing, 2). Pilot industry scale sensing and operational trials, and 3). Industry operational trials. The four activity streams are a). Sensor system development that will determine the number and efficacy of sensors operating at a yard, stack and board scales, b).Drying condition model development that will align the information collected with the observed drying behaviour and the potential for whole-‐of-‐site timber management, c). Industry process integration that will ensure technical outcomes can be implemented given industry's current operational capacity, and d). Project 4 management.
