Dr Frances Fan is a Senior Lecturer in Early Childhood Education at the University of Tasmania, Newnham Campus. She completed her PhD at the University of Tasmania in 2011. She has been involved in a number of research projects, and has a broad research interest in Early Childhood Education, higher education and online pedagogy, teacher education and language education.
Biography
Frances started working in the School of Education in 2012, prior to this role, she worked as an academic researcher at the School of Medicine, University of Tasmania.

Teaching expertise
Frances is currently coordinating three units in the Bachelor of Education courses: EDU202 Planning for Positive Behaviour; ESH347 Documenting Children’s Learning; and ESH348 Leadership and Management in Early Childhood Services. Students in these units are supported with a wide range of learning technologies and online resources, including: video clips, recorded interviews with school teachers and experts in the field, recorded classroom scenarios, online public lectures, e-portfolio tools, PowerPoint and Prezi presentations, and professional development websites.
Research Invitations
Frances was the Convenor of The International Conference: Innovative Research in a Changing and Challenging World (Phuket, Thailand 16-18 May 2012). The conference was attended by over 150 academics and researchers from over 30 universities, 15 countries.

Expertise
Frances’s research integrates student engagement and retention theories with learning analytics. She has close partnerships with academics in the area of computing and data sciences, to advance knowledge of learning analytics adoption to support student engagement in higher education. Her research informs teaching practices in university contexts, including teacher education and other disciplines that utilise online learning and teaching.

Research Themes
After completing her Bachelors Degree in English Literature in China, Frances moved to Australia to study the Master of Teaching program in the Faculty of Education, University of Tasmania. She then moved to Sydney to teach as an early childhood teacher where she worked with young children for one and a half years before moving back to Tasmania to do her PhD degree. Frances completed her PhD study in the Faculty of Education, University of Tasmania in 2011, before taking on a lecturing role in the Faculty. Frances is now teaching a number of units in the Bachelor of Education course (Early Childhood). She maintains broad research interests.
Collaboration
Frances partnered with Professor David Kember and Professor Sue Kilpatrick (UTAS), Professor Rob Ellis (Griffith University), and Dr Doris Leung (Hong Kong Polytechnic University) to undertake the project: Admission and success for low SES university students.
Frances also has ongoing partnerships with Professor Jiannong Cao and Dr Yu Yang (Hong Kong Polytechnic University) to work on the project: Learning analytics supported student engagement in Australian higher education.

Understanding and supporting a diverse student intake in online learning. (2024 - 2025)$49,997
- Description
- The Australian Universities Accord sets increasing Higher Education enrolments with a more diverse intake for the next two decades. Under-represented groups, including low SES students and those from Regional and Remote areas, will form a large proportion of this diverse intake. A majority of these students will seek access to HE courses through online and blended learning. Universities must reconceptualise their pedagogical approaches and prepare their online courses, to better engage and retain the increasingly diverse student intake. This interdisciplinary project will integrate data from a Learning Management System, surveys and interviews, to identify engagement behaviour for low SES and Rural & Remote students, and best online pedagogical practices that maximise the engagement and retention of students in these priority groups.

Admission and success for low SES university students (2019)$379,999
- Description
- The project investigates the retention and success of low socio-economic status (SES) students in higher education. Low SES students are currently: admitted through multiple alternative entry modes; study remotely; study part-time; study online or through blended learning; have family and work commitments; be mature students; and are less likely to have parents educated at tertiary level. This project hypothesises that all these variables interact in a complex multivariate model that impacts low SES student retention, success and completion. The overall aim of the project is to develop actionable knowledge for governments, university leaders, discipline heads and program directors to boost the retention, success and completion rates of low SES students through a study that incorporates a quantitative phase using structural equation modelling (SEM), case studies to explore student lives and admission practices and a literature review of the existing research and current successful programs.

'Big Data' and learning analytics for Australian higher education: second stage of pilot project (2018)$11,132
- Description
- The primary aim of this prospective project is to examine university lecturers and tutors' pedagogical approaches and student engagement in online learning, through the use of Big Data and learning analytics, using UTAS as a starting point. In this project, emerging analytic techniques and skills (e.g. R & Python) will be adopted to analyse archived data from MyLO, including: online discussions, lecturer feedback, news . items, unit materials/resources, and student engagement statistics generated by MyLO analytics. This proposed project examines correlations between student engagement and participation and the following factors: 1.lecturers' and tutors' pedagogical support;2.student interactions with the lecturer, tutors and peers;3.types of teaching materials/resources uploaded; and4.student results and evaluation.Big Data indicates "large pools of data that can be captured, communicated, aggregated, stored, and analysed" (Manyika et al., 2011, p.4). Big Data analytics analyses the flow of information, and thereby, reveals hidden threads, trends and patterns in the data (Matteson, 2013). Therefore, it is relevant to all organisations, including higher education institutions, that produce large data sets, and wish to benefit from the interpretation of these data.In recent years, there has been an increase in the use of Big Data analytics for educational purposes, driven and facilitated by various reasons, one of which is the pressure faced by educational institutions towards performance management and student retention (Beer, 2010). One most common form of Big Data analytics in higher education is learning analytics. Learning analytics applications enable institutions to build predictive models on student outcomes, especially to identify at-risk students and to provide early warnings so that interventions can be made (Rienties et al., 2016). The proposed project, is the second stage of a frontier research to explore the use of Big Data and learning analytics to identify such patterns for higher education.

Enriching fathers' and male caregivers' understanding of children's learning and development (2013)$9,568

- The objectives of this project, for fathers and male caregivers, are to:*engage them in their child/ren's learning and development; *enhance their knowledge and understanding of the critical importance of rich conversations and interactions with their child/ren's learning and development from birth;*understand the importance of hearing their child/ren's voices and to respond accordingly;*record/document their child/ren's learning and development;*build a shared network between fathers to promote opportunities for them to talk about their *child/ren 's growth and well-being;*plan and implement a series of interactive workshop conversations with groups of fathers and male caregivers about their child/ren's learning and development; and to*strengthen family unity and well-being for Tasmanian children.The target population for this project includes fathers and male caregivers of children who attend one of the five Long Day Care Centres selected from the Northern Children's Network (NCN). This incorporation has been purposively selected as it is a non-for-profit organisation with childcare and education centres, located in a range of differing levels of socio-economic status. Social status is important because research indicates that parents particularly from disadvantaged areas benefit from learning about and participating in their children's education and development.

Frances has been working actively with collaborators from the Faculty of Education, from other disciplines within the University of Tasmania, and from other Australian universities. In 2011 and 2012, together with another two team members from the School of Medicine, She was involved a research collaboration with the Southern General Practice Training, Australia.
