Dr Robyn Reaburn is a Lecturer in Mathematics Education at the University of Tasmania. Her doctoral thesis examined tertiary students' understanding of statistical inference, particularly confidence intervals and P-values. She also completed a research Master's degree examining the relationship between particulate pollution and the visits of people with respiratory illnesses to the general hospital in Launceston. Her interests include the teaching of statistics and calculus and assisting students who lack confidence in mathematics.

Biography

Dr Robyn Reaburn is a lecturer in Mathematics Education at the University of Tasmania. She completed her doctorate in statistics education. She has taught for many years in high schools, Technical and Further Education, and at the University of Tasmania and the Australian Maritime College. Before this she worked for many years as a biomedical scientist where she specialised in Haematology. Her current research interests include students' understanding of statistical concepts on entry to university, and statistics lecturers' knowledge of content and pedagogy. She also takes an interest in students who have little confidence in their mathematics ability on entering post-secondary education.

Expertise

Robyn's research aligns to the University's research themes of Data, Knowledge and Decisions. Her research interests include the effectiveness of parental involvement in early mathematics education and the role of Teachers' Aides in mathematics classrooms. Her research into tertiary students' understanding of inferential statistics led to the implementation of strategies that assist students in the understanding of these difficult topics. Her research also has shown that tertiary students may have poor understanding of fundamental concepts such as the mean even though they may be competent at mathematics and can perform the procedures. Her current interests also include the language of Mathematics.

Collaboration

Robyn is on the management team on the TEMPEST: Towards Educating Mathematics Professionals Encompassing Science and Technology project.  This is a Commonwealth Government funded project. Project partners include the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers, the Tasmanian Department of Education, TasTAFE, Independent Schools Tasmania, Tasmanian Catholic Education Office and Swinburne University of Technology.  This project aims to improve the quality of maths and science education throughout the country.

An exploration of University academic staffs self-perception about supporting diverse learners (2018)$9,387
Description
In the last few decades, increasing equitable access to higher education has been on the agenda for Governments globally. Yet, completion rates and other indicators for achievement for people from diverse backgrounds remain low. This project looks at this issue from the perspective of academics. How do academics perceive their ability and capacity to support diverse learners?

Promoting and supporting parent involvement in primary students' mathematics learning (2015)$5,808
Description
The project will conduct workshops for the parents of early primary school children to assist them to gain knowledge andconfidence in their own mathematics skills so that they can better assist their children at home. Research shows that aparent's role is a substantial factor in children's education success (Merttens, 1999). However, research also shows thatparents' lack of skill and confidence in mathematics can inhibit their involvement in their children's learning (Haylock, 2007).These workshops will focus on fundamental mathematics skills with an emphasis on fractions and decimals. The workshopswill assist parents to gain conceptual and procedural knowledge of these fundamental mathematics skills, give parentsknowledge of modern inquiry methods, and help parents to gain a positive attitude to mathematics that can be passed on totheir children. The topics of some of these workshops will be selected by consultation with the parents, and at eachworkshop time will be allowed for questions and discussion. The project will involve the preparation of professionally prepared materials that can be taken home as a resource forparents to use in the long-term. Surveys will also be carried out so that the success of the project can be assessed. On thebasis of this feedback, it is intended that the workshops will be refined and be made available to schools to implement asthey wish. It is also intended that similar workshops will be developed for parents of late primary school students.

Teaching Secondary Mathematics (2014 - 2015)$76,434
Description
The project will investigate; 1) how education jurisdictions and university mathematics educators can collaborate to construct a professional learning program for secondary mathematics teachers; 2) how a collaboratively planned research based 5 day professional learning program can influence the knowledge, beliefs and practice of secondary mathematics teachers; 3) the extent to which changed practices are noticed by students; 4) the impacts of a collaboratively planned research based 5 day professional learning program on students' attitudes to mathematics. The PL program will include innovative elements. In addition research detecting the impacts of teacher PL on students is rare and so the results of the project should be readily publishable in high quality journals e.g. Mathematics Teacher Education and Development and the Journal of Mathematics Teachers Education. Co-construction of PL programs is also rare and hence the documentation and analysis of this aspect of the project will make a further contribution to the research literature.
