Professor Andrew Bowie is a Chemical Oceanographer. His research investigates the biogeochemistry of trace elements in Southern Ocean and Antarctic sea ice environments, with projects addressing key research questions related to atmospheric dust deposition and solubilities, ocean iron fertilisation, physico-chemical speciation of trace elements and their isotopes, and the role of ocean dynamics on chemical and biological marine processes. His research outcomes are focused on assessment of trace element control of ocean productivity, ocean carbon sequestration and expanding our knowledge of marine geochemical processes. His research is supported by the Antarctic Climate and Ecosystems CRC (ACE CRC), the Australian Research Council (ARC), and several national and international collaborative grants.

Andrew has provided leadership of international chemical oceanography research expeditions, is a member of the Scientific Steering Committee and co-chair of the Data Management Committee of the 'GEOTRACES' program (an international study of the global marine biogeochemical cycles of trace elements and their isotopes), and is an Associate Editor for the journal Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta. He is currently an ARC Future Fellow and co-leader of ACE CRC Project 2.1 'Carbon Uptake and Chemical Change'.

Biography

Professor Andrew Bowie joined IMAS in 2012. He completed his PhD in Chemical Oceanography in 1999 from the University of Plymouth (UK). He has worked at the University of Tasmania since 2001 with research supported by Australian Research Council fellowships and the Antarctic Climate and Ecosystems CRC.

Research Themes

Andrew's research aligns to the University's research theme of Marine, Antarctic and Maritime, and is centred on core targets for the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS); specifically chemical oceanographic processes in the Southern Ocean, including biogeochemical feedbacks from ocean processes to climate, and the impact of a changing climate on the ocean. His research provides knowledge of the important natural supply of micronutrient trace elements that fertilise the highly productive ecosystems of the Southern Ocean and contribute significantly to global carbon dioxide mitigation. He adopts an Earth system approach to understanding land–atmosphere–ocean interactions and the coupling of terrestrial and marine ecosystems.

Collaboration

Zooplankton and ocean productivity under a changing climate (2023 - 2025)$411,554
Description
The scarcity of iron in the Southern Ocean limits biological productivity and carbon uptake. There is currently very little Information on zooplankton iron content, yet available data points to high variability. This variability is leading to poor predictive outcomes for models of Southern Ocean iron and carbon cycling. Our project addresses this knowledge gap by quantifying zooplankton iron content and examining its biogeochemical and ecological impacton Southern Ocean productivity. Developing an understanding of how iron is cycled through zooplankton will provide significant benefits including improved global models used to quantify current and future patterns of ocean productivity critical for environmental and economic predictions.

Detecting Southern Ocean change from repeat hydrography, deep Argo and trace element biogeochemistry (2018)$0
Description
The Southern Ocean influences climate, sea level, biogeochemical cycles and marine productivity on global scales. Changes in the Southern Ocean circulation would therefore have widespread consequences. Observations suggest that rapid change is already underway, but the measurements are sparse and hence the nature, causes and implications of Southern Ocean change are not yet understood.

Natural iron fertilisation of oceans around Australia: linking terrestrial dust and bushfires to marine biogeochemistry (2016 - 2017)$0
Description
The application will support research to quantify the importance of iron-rich aerosols from Australia for marine biogeochemistry and ocean ecosystem health. The project will sample and conduct experiments on atmospheric particles containing terrestrial dust and bushfire smoke that are transported from Australia to its surrounding oceans. The application supports the training and research of two postgraduate students from IMAS-UTAS. The outcomes will provide a scientific basis for managing the complex role of iron in sustaining marine ecosystem biodiversity and for informing government policy on ocean fertilisation as a carbon mitigation strategy.

Hot iron: Are submarine volcanoes important for Southern Ocean iron supply? (2015 - 2017)$233,400
Description
The scarcity of iron limits biological productivity and carbon uptake in the nutrient rich waters of the SouthernOcean. This project will explore for the first time the role of undersea "hot spot" volcanoes in supplying iron tosurface waters, thus linking the solid earth and the biosphere. The team will measure iron abundance, reactivity and nutritional value in buoyant plumes emanating from vents near Heard/McDonald Islands,Australia's only active volcanoes. The project will estimate the hydrothermal contribution to regional biologicalproductivity and extrapolate to the whole Southern Ocean. This will benefit Australia by identifying ironsources that govern productivity and carbon uptake of an economically important ecosystem.

Submarine volcanism and hydrothermalism around Heard and McDonald Islands (2015 - 2016)$65,600
Description
The scarcity of iron limits biological productivity and carbon uptake in the nutrient rich waters of the Southern Ocean. This project will explore for the first time the role of undersea "hotspot" volcanoes in supplying iron to surface waters, thus linking the solid earth and the biosphere. Existing data indicate that fields of submarine volcanoes extend for several hundred kilometres from Heard and McDonald islands, among the world's most active hotspot volcanoes. We will produce a three dimensional, high-resolution bathymetric and backscatter map of the seafloor surrounding the islands. We will map the water column for chemical signatures of hydrothermal activity. From this mapping we will identify and sample candidate active submarine volcanoes, a first for this region. We will measure iron abundance, and reactivity in buoyant plumes over and downstream of these volcanoes, and evaluate physical mixing processes that might deliver this iron to surface waters.

Assessment of habitats, productivity and food webs on the Kerguelen Axis in the Indian Sector of the Southern Ocean (2015)$0
Description
The Southern Ocean is one of the most rapidly changing environments on earth. Australia seeks to sustain marine resources of high fisheries and conservation value that are dependent on the productive ecosystems of the Kerguelen Axis (including Australia's Territory of Heard Island and McDonald Islands south to the Antarctic continent). The Kerguelen Axis has never been surveyed as a single region to determine the critical relationships between environmental and biogeochemical drivers responsible for the transition between the northern copepod-fish dominated foodweb to the southern krill-based foodweb. This knowledge is essential for ecosystem-based management of fisheries, as well as conservation of whale populations and marine biodiversity. The results will be important for assessing likely responses to change in the ecosystem (from climate or fisheries) as well as change in the global oceans and carbon cycle, which are fundamental to the Earth's response to climate change

Natural iron fertilisation of oceans around Australia: linking terrestrial dust, marine biogeochemistry and climate (2013 - 2017)$869,625
Description
Oceans play a vital role in Earth's climate through the control of atmospheric carbon dioxide. An important component of this system is the iron cycle, in which iron-rich dust is transported from the land via atmosphere to ocean; iron is a key micronutrient for marine phytoplankton, the scarcity of which limits essential biogeochemical processes and ocean fertility. This project conducts an integrated oceanographic and atmospheric observational program for trace elements in the oceans around Australia. This will provide the critical information on iron supplied from atmospheric dust for ocean productivity and marine ecosystem health, providing the science for predicting a key factor in the future impact of the oceans on climate.
