Professor McMinn's research has focused on sea ice ecology and environmental change. He has investigated the ecology, biochemistry, production and photophysiology of sea ice microbial communities. In particular, he pioneered the in situ use of micro sensors in polar environments. His work has also included an examination of the effects of UV, work that was subsequently published in Nature.

Professor McMinn was the inaugural Director of the International Antarctic Institute, a consortium of 20 Antarctic-focused universities. In 2007, he was appointed to the UNESCO-Cousteau Chair for the Antarctic Environment. Professor McMinn is currently working on the effects of ocean acidification on sea ice communities. This also includes the cumulative impacts of multi-stressors. This research is being conducted both in the field and in lab-based sea ice tanks.

Biography

Professor McMinn graduated from Sydney University with first class honours in 1978, gained a PhD from Macquarie University in 1985 and a DSc from the University of Tasmania in 2006.  After working for 10 years with the NSW Geological Survey in Sydney, he moved to University of Tasmania in 1991. In May 2002, he became Director of the Institute of Antarctic and Southern Ocean Studies (IASOS). He has spent 16 field seasons in the Antarctic, 4 in the Arctic and 5 on sea ice in Hokkaido.

Projects

The Australian Centre for Excellence in Antarctic Science (2020 - 2025)$22,302,208
Description
The Centre will revolutionise predictions of the future of East Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. Changes in the Antarctic will be profoundly costly to Australia, including sea-level and fisheries impacts; but the speed and scale of future change remains poorly understood. A new national-scale and interdisciplinary Centre is required to understand the complex interactions of the ocean, ice sheets, atmosphere and ecosystems that will govern Antarctica's future. The Centre will combine new field data with innovative models to address Australia's Antarctic science priorities, train graduate students, develop leaders, engage the public, and enable major economic benefit as Australia adapts to climate change in the coming years and beyond.

HARMFUL ALGAL BLOOMS AND THEIR LONG-TERM SEDIMENT RECORD IN EAST COAST TASMANIAN WATERS (2018)$0
Description
Unprecedented toxic dinoflagellate blooms occurred off east coast Tasmania in 2012 and 2015/2016. These events led to a global shellfish product recall (AUD23M loss), lengthy (4 months) closures of mussel, oyster, scallop, and rock lobster fisheries, and 4 human hospitalisations (Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning). While the causative Alexandrium dinoflagellate had been previously detected, genetic evidence suggests that blooms represent a cryptic genotype newly stimulated by climate-driven increased water column stratification. We seek to characterize blooms from with the long time (1000+ yr) ancient DNA sediment record using novel genetic methods. This work is part of a successful 450k ARC DP grant

Improved management of coastal plankton systems by ancient DNA technology (2017 - 2019)$439,000
Description
Long term data are sparse for Australian coastal and estuarine waters and seriously impede management of fisheries, tourism and urban development. Long term records are essential to understand dynamic plankton ecosystems with respect to disruptive algal and jellyfish blooms, impacts from introduced species and increasedhuman utilisation of coastal resources. This project will apply major advances in ancient DNA technology to dated sediment depth cores to assemble comprehensive long term Australian plankton records spanning 50 to 1000 years. This will allow us to explore cyclical patterns, define range expansions and improve our understanding and management of how dynamic coastal ecosystems respond to multistressor anthropogenic change.

On thin ice? An in situ surveillance system for sea ice microbial communities (2017 - 2018)$73,466
Description
The predicted loss of annual Antarctic sea ice (est. between 17% - 31%) within the next century will influence the ecological integrity of the Southern Ocean. Sea ice supports a unique assemblage of microorganisms that underpin Antarctic coastal food-webs, but reduced ice thickness coupled with increased snow cover will modify energy flow and trophic dynamics in ways that are difficult to predict. This project will deploy state-of-the-art biosensors to track environmental stress in sea ice microbial communities. This in situ surveillance system will generate unique baseline data against which future changes in ecosystem structure and function can be measured.

Assessment of habitats, productivity and food webs on the Kerguelen Axis in the Indian Sector of the Southern Ocean (2015)$0
Description
The Southern Ocean is one of the most rapidly changing environments on earth. Australia seeks to sustain marine resources of high fisheries and conservation value that are dependent on the productive ecosystems of the Kerguelen Axis (including Australia's Territory of Heard Island and McDonald Islands south to the Antarctic continent). The Kerguelen Axis has never been surveyed as a single region to determine the critical relationships between environmental and biogeochemical drivers responsible for the transition between the northern copepod-fish dominated foodweb to the southern krill-based foodweb. This knowledge is essential for ecosystem-based management of fisheries, as well as conservation of whale populations and marine biodiversity. The results will be important for assessing likely responses to change in the ecosystem (from climate or fisheries) as well as change in the global oceans and carbon cycle, which are fundamental to the Earth's response to climate change

Response of sea ice algae to multiple co-stressors (2015 - 2017)$75,030
Description
Sea ice algal photosynthesis and productivity is simultaneously affected by factors such as light, nutrients, micronutrients (e.g. iron), salinity and temperature. Using lab-based artificial sea ice tanks we will examine the combined effect of several co-stressors during ice formation and ice melting. In particular we will examine the effects of low iron, elevated CO2 and high and low salinity. This will characterise the effects of ice formation and melt processes in a higher CO2 environment

An integrated study of Antarctic land-fast sea ice physical and biological processes (2015)$0
Description
Land-fast sea ice (fast ice) is a pre-eminent feature of the Antractic coastal zone, is a senstitive indicator and modulator of Antarctic marine ecosystems. This joint Australia - New Zealand multi-disciplinary project will improve understanding of, and measurement capability for, coupled physical-biological processes in Antarctic fast ice. By combining field experiments, the use of automated observatories, historical data collation, satellite observations and statisitical modelling, the project will provide new data on local-to-circum-Antarctic scales. A key output of the project will be a physically-informed model of the seasonal development and fate of Antarctic fast-ice associated algal biomass. Furthermore, analyses will enhance the understanding of sea ice in Antarctic climate processes and will be utilised to improve parameterisation and evalutation of sea ice physical models.

Free Ocean Carbon Enrichment infrastructure for the Southern Ocean: measuring impacts of ocean acidification on biological communities (2013)$150,000
Description
Carbon dioxide absorption in seawater changes its chemistry - reducing pH and thereby raising acidity - which has serious implications for the resilience of marine ecosystems in a future high carbon dioxide ocean. Polar ecosystems are expected to bear the heaviest burden of this 'ocean acidification'. Using proven Free Ocean Carbon Enrichment (FOCE) experimental technology the project will deploy the world's first polar oceancarbon enrichment infrastructure to: 1) assess the vulnerability of natural polar organisms to ocean acidification; and 2) contribute to the international network of FOCE facilities that are currently established in temperate (Monterey Bay, USA) and tropical (Heron Island, Australia) ocean ecosystems.
