Professor Craig Johnson is a marine community ecologist at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS). He is interested in identifying the drivers of marine community dynamics, and how to interpret change in marine communities. He works mostly with shallow reef systems, but current work also includes the Southern Ocean. His work is evenly divided between field programs and computer modelling, and across animals and seaweeds. He leads a productive group of postdoctoral fellows and graduate students.

Biography

Craig completed his PhD in Nova Scotia in Canada in 1985, and he subsequently worked at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography in Canada, Marine Biology Institute at the University of Cape Town, Australian Institute of Marine Science, Griffith University, and in the Department of Zoology at the University of Queensland before moving to take up the Chair in Zoology at the University of Tasmania in 1997.

His research is broadly concerned with the space-time dynamics of marine ecosystems, encompassing interactions among suites of organisms spanning bacteria, algae, invertebrates and fish. img-rMost of his work has focused on temperate and tropical reefs, but is now expanding to include ecological dynamics of the Southern Ocean. A unifying theme of his recent work is to understand change in marine communities, including to discern 'tipping points' in marine systems and identify management options to avoid them. Craig's research activity is divided between field work, which is strongly focused on conducting in situ experiments underwater, and building computer models of marine system dynamics.

Craig chaired the Marine National Facility Steering Committee 2004-14, and maintains a strong interest in ensuring open access to publicly funded scientific data through work on the Steering Committee of the Australian National Data Service. He has played leading roles in a large range of national and international initiatives including establishment and development of the Australian Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS) and eMII (its data management facility), and the Modeling and Decision Support Working Group of the World Bank Coral Reef Targeted Research Program.

Research Themes

Craig's research is squarely within the Marine, Antarctic and Maritime research theme of the University of Tasmania. Most of his recent and current work is focussed on the ecology of kelp beds, with field work spanning Tasmania, Victoria, New South Wales and Western Australia. However, through collaborative projects he is working on modelling kelp bed dynamics in South Australia and in many other systems worldwide. Most of this work is focused on change in kelp bed systems; in particular, the impacts of climate change and other anthropogenic stressors, the possibility of 'flips' in system state from productive kelp beds to degraded reefs dominated by sea urchin barrens or turfing algae, how to manage kelp-based systems for resilience and maintenance of ecosystem services, and how to restore kelp beds.

A unifying theme in this work is whether temperate reef systems can exist as alternative stable states under identical environmental conditions and, if so, to estimate the size of the hysteresis and implications for management, and to estimate where the 'tipping points' in the system lie. A related current project is assessing whether pelagic Southern Ocean systems to the east of the Kerguelen Plateau can also exist in alternative stable configurations (either dominated by jellyfish and other gelatinous zooplankton, or by krill and other large crustaceans) under identical environmental conditions, and whether this affects foraging patterns in elephant seals.

One particularly exciting project focussed on the effects of climate change on kelp-based systems involves a field experiment of unprecedented scale. The experiment comprises a series of 24 artificial patch reefs set out on a little over a hectare of sea floor, representing 3 groups of 8 reefs of a range of sizes, with each 'group' supporting either zero, modest cover or dense cover of kelps. The experiment is determining how patch size and kelp density affects (1) the kelp's capacity to renew itself, and (2) the make-up of associated seaweeds, invertebrates and fishes.

Other work is concerned with prediction of biodiversity patterns in Antarctic waters, using kelps to mitigate nutrient inputs from finfish aquaculture, and predicting the impacts of climate change on the structure of deep reef (30-100 m depth) communities in eastern Australia.

Unravelling the diversity and complexity of reef communities using metagenomics (2022 - 2023)$12,880

Developing production systems for offshore kelp mariculture (2022 - 2024)$1,559,025

The project will review, design and trial offshore production systems for kelp mariculture, further select for kelp genotypes to cope with ongoing ocean warming, monitor the performance and potential impact of the kelp production system, and use these empirical measures to enable modelling production and environmental impacts (positive and negative) of kelp mariculture at commercial scales. TNC Kelp Conservation Project (2021 - 2022)$114,450

IMAS-UTAS & TNC have forged a partnership to research and better understand the decline and restoration of giant kelp(Macrocystis pyrifera) in Tasmania. NESP MaC 1.28: Assessment of thermal tolerance in giant kelp (2021)$49,880
Description
Climate change and associated-stressors are responsible for declining kelp forests in Australia and around the world. Restoration can be an effective tool for the conservation of these critically-important habitats, however these types of interventions are largely ineffective if the driver of habitat loss is not remedied or ameliorated. Unfortunately, climate change is not something that can be fixed in the short-medium term and so restoration efforts where climate change is the driver of kelp forest loss (such as in south east and south west Australia) instead have to ensure the restoration of adapted or 'future-proofed' kelp strains/individuals. Previous work at IMAS has identified warm-tolerant strains of Tasmanian giant kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera) and are currently using them as the foundation for restoration trials. However, it is unknown what the actual physiological mechanisms are behind the increased thermal performance of these 'super kelp'. And so, using those same giant kelp strains, which are stored in a kelp seedbank at IMAS, this project will employ innovative physiological approaches to reveal the mechanisms behind the improved thermal tolerance. This work will produce knowledge that is directly applicable to kelp forest restoration and biology but also the nascent Australian/Tasmanian kelp aquaculture industry, whilst also being transferable to other kelp species in Australia and globally.

Detecting, attributing, predicting and monitoring ecological change in the Southern Ocean (2020 - 2022)$149,267

This project aims to provide scientific information on the ecological impacts of climate change and other drivers on key components of the Southern Ocean ecosystem to facilitate evidence-based monitoring, management and policy decisions. we will use new statistical methods in ecology and combine them with existing, long-term datasets of demersal fish on the Kerguelen Plateau and zooplankton in East Antarctica. We will provide maps and new, quantitative knowledge on if, how (which species) and why (in response to which factors) these key Southern Ocean assemblages have changed in recent years and what they are likely to look like in the future. This will significantly advance the scientific information available for planning and evaluation policy and management actions. it will also provide a basis for optimising the design of an effective and cost-effective zooplankton monitoring system to track changes and measure the performance of spatial management into the future.

Predicting biodiversity distribution on the Antarctic continental shelf (2019 - 2022)$660,000

Antarctic seafloor communities are unique and highly diverse, but their distribution is poorly known becausebiological data are sparse. We aim to develop an international database of underwater observations to, for the firsttime, predict the distribution of seafloor biodiversity over the entire Antarctic continental shelf for the present dayand 2100. These predictions depend on a unique and validated approach to estimate the present and futureredistribution of surface primary production to the seafloor, and will enable calculating the amount of atmosphericcarbon captured and stored at the seafloor. The maps will be at an unprecedented resolution (~2 km), and beinvaluable tools underpinning policy, management and future science.

Restoration and permaculture of giant kelp forests in Tasmania (2018 - 2019)$235,537
Description
Giant kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera) forests were previously a conspicuous and iconic feature of the eastern Tasmanian coast, but loss of ~95% of dense surface canopies has seen giant kelp forests listed as an endangered marine community in Australia. The collapse of giant forests is associated with ocean warming and the increased influence of warm East Australian Current water in eastern Tasmania. Nonetheless scattered healthy individual giant kelps persist. This project is focussed on identifying warm tolerant genotypes, and means to restore dense surface canopy stands of giant kelp that are self-replenishing and self-expanding. This research will also aid development of giant kelp for commercial harvest and as a means to ameliorate nitrogen input from fish farms in an integrated multi-trophic aquaculture setting.

Evaluating the likelihood of regime shifts in Southern Ocean ecosystems (2016)$5,000
Description
Effective ecosystem-based management requires that we manage for potential as well as current ecosystem dynamics. This is made more challenging if the potential dynamics of a system include a regime shift - a sudden shift from one stable ecosystem state to another. Such a transition can occur in ecosystems where higher order positive feedback loops stabilise the system until a critical threshold is reached, after which the system is propelled into an alternate state (Marzloff et al. 2011). In the Southern Ocean changes have occurred at multiple levels of the ecosystem, but there is not yet evidence that these changes are indicative of a regime shift (Weimerskirch et al. 2003, Atkinson et al. 2004). My thesis will address two components of this problem: 1) the detection and 2) the possibility of regime shifts in Southern Ocean ecosystems. In the first year of my PhD I developed an analytical method for detecting regime shifts from transect data. In the second part of my PhD, I will focus on evaluating the susceptibility of Southern Ocean ecosystem to regime shifts by investigating the importance of a key positive feedback: the ability of phytoplankton to promote their own blooms by releasing the chemical compounds dimethylsulfide (DMS) and dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP, parent molecule of DMS). Some higher predators can smell DMS or DMSP and use it to navigate to productive patches in the ocean (Nevitt et al. 1995, DeBose et al. 2010). These predators then consume the zooplankton which eat phytoplankton, thereby releasing phytoplankton from a major source of mortality. This may facilitate larger phytoplankton blooms, resulting in more energy entering the food chain (Lewis et al. 2012, Savoca and Nevitt 2014). Despite the potential importance of this feedback in structuring the system, the relationship between DMS/DMSP concentrations in the Southern Ocean and spatial distributions of phytoplankton, zooplankton and predator species assemblages have never been investigated. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the potential strength and importance of this feedback within the system. This question will be addressed using two complementary approaches: qualitative network modelling, and a data-driven analysis of DMS and DMSP concentrations in the Indian Ocean sector of the Southern Ocean in relation to environmental variables and species assemblages.

Using size-based models to understand the role of mesopelagic fish and squid in the Southern Ocean ecosystem (2015 - 2016)$161,325
Description
Mesopelagic fish are the most abundant vertebrate in the biosphere, accounting for more biomass than any other group of fish. In the Southern Ocean, mesopelagic fish and squid play a key role transferring energy from zooplankton to higher predators, and several species of fish are or commercial importance. However, the sensitivity of mesopelagic fish and squid to the combined impacts of fishing and climate change is poorly understood. Model representations of these groups which would inform our understanding of their current status and potential future trends are currently lacking. This project will develop size-based (or size spectrum) models to fill this gap. Size based model provide a powerful means to understand how marine communities are organised and how they respond to fishing and climate change. This project will advance our understanding of the role of mesopelagic species in Southern Ocean ecosystems and inform the development of indicators for ecological change.

Dynamic resilience and stability properties of marine systems: the importance of environment-engineer feedbacks in kelp forests (2013 - 2015)$325,000
Description
Habitat-forming 'ecosystem engineers' modify the environment to the benefit of many other species, and are crucial to the functioning of their ecosystem. This project proposes that the environmental changes they cause are also crucial to the stability and resilience of the ecosystem engineer species themselves, i.e. that there is a positive feedback between changes to the environment caused by the engineer species and the engineer's demography (an environment-engineer feedback). The project will test this idea for the most ecologically important habitat-forming kelp (Ecklonia radiata) in temperate Australasia, generating new knowledge to identify critical thresholds for this key habitat-forming species in the face of significant anthropogenic threat.

This project will deliver improved capacity to understand, manage and conserve Australia's unique Antarctic biodiversity and ecosystems through cutting edge research that will be delivered to Australian environmental decision makers and other key stakeholders. It will focus on quantifying and predicting offshore marine biodiversity to provide a consistent and comprehensive view using methods recently developed in Australia. It will deliver information that stakeholders need to better inform biodiversity management and policy and decision making in the short-term and into the future.

Effects of Climate Change on Temperate Benthic Assemblages on the Continental Shelf in Eastern Australia (2011 - 2014)$556,800
Description
Change in behaviour of the East Australian Current (EAC) underpins a rate of ocean warming in SE Australia 3.8 times the global average and declining nutrient levels. The proposed work will determine present patterns of physical parameters on the continental shelf in SE Australia, and predict changes in both the trend and variability of the temperature and nutrient signal on the shelf. These data will be combined with observations of benthic communities 0-200 m depth to, for the first time, develop bioclimate models to predict changes in these key habitats so important for major fisheries and as areas of high biodiversity. Unique data from experiments will enable testing the efficacy of current approaches to bioclimate prediction.

Impacts of Climate Change on Key Habitat-forming Seaweeds in SE Australia (2010 - 2012)$275,000
Description
This projects addresses effects of climate change on three key habitat-forming seaweeds on rocky reefs in SE Australia in a region currently warming at around 3.8 times the global average. Importantly, it examines the synergistic effects of changes in both temperature and nutrient levels, since the two are tightly linked in Nature. The project assesses whether performance of individuals within warmer parts of species' ranges is helpful in predicting responses to climate change in colder parts of a range and, in one key species (Ecklonia radiata), estimating the heritability of key traits and thus the potential to adapt to climate change.
