Dr Helen Phillips is a Senior Research Fellow in Physical Oceanography at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies, University of Tasmania. She is interested in how the small-scale features in the ocean, such as waves and eddies, affect the large currents that are critical pathways for heat and other properties to be spread through the ocean. She is an observational oceanographer, spending time on research vessels to collect observations in the Indian and Southern Oceans, but also using robotic instruments to collect data remotely and send it home over the mobile phone network.

Biography

After completing her PhD at UTAS in 2000, Helen moved to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, USA to work on observations and modelling of the North Atlantic Ocean. Two years later she moved to a position at CSIRO to study the changing patterns of salinity in the Indian Ocean that were newly revealed by the Argo array. In 2005, she accepted a Research Fellowship in Physical Oceanography at UTAS. Since then, Helen has played a pivotal role in building Physical Oceanography research at IMAS, as well as contributing to postgraduate student supervision and to the teaching program.

Research Themes

Helen's research contributes to the University's research theme of Marine, Antarctic and Maritime. She has two main interests: currents in the Indian and Southern Oceans, and the role of eddies in influencing the large-scale currents.

Helen has contributed to characterising the eastward currents that travel all the way across the Indian Ocean to feed into the Leeuwin Current flowing southward along the West Australian coastline. The Indian Ocean has a strong influence on Australian climate, yet we still have only a basic understanding of the Indian Ocean currents and their sensitivity to global warming. In the Southern Ocean, the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) flows around Antarctic connecting the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. Strong winds drive the ACC eastward. These winds have become stronger in recent decades, while the strength of the ACC remains unchanged. Helen's team is leading international efforts to make measurements of the ocean processes that slow down the ACC, which will allow us to test competing theories and will lead to improvements in climate models and better guidance for decision makers.

Collaboration

Helen has strong research connections across Australia and with researchers in the UK, USA and New Zealand. Her Indian Ocean work is in partnership with oceanographers at CSIRO, the Australian Insititute of Marine Science, the International Pacific Research Centre, University of Hawai'i, and the Pacific Marine and Environmental Laboratory, NOAA, USA. Her Southern Ocean work involves collaborations with oceanographers at CSIRO, the New Zealand National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA),  the UK National Oceanography Centre, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and the University of Rhode Island.

Publications

Helen's early papers examine the role of eddies in the momentum balance of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, interannual variability in the subtropical North Atlantic circulation and water masses, and the variability in ocean salinity west of Australia due to the El Nino-Southern Oscillation phenomenon. A highlight from her early career was Phillips, H. and S. Rintoul, 2000: 'Eddy variability and energetics from direct current measurements in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current south of Australia' J. Phys. Oceanogr., 30, 3050-3076. This work provided direct observations of eddy processes that are central to the Meridional Overturning Circulation, an area of research that is now receiving intense interest.

More recently, Helen has returned to Southern Ocean research and has published results from a novel field program near the Kerguelen Plateau with students and Australian and international colleagues. This Kerguelen experiment was the first time the novel EM-APEX profiling float had been used to study small-scale features in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current.

Her expanded interest in Indian Ocean research now involves theoretical and observational studies of the physical and biogeochemical structure of Indian Ocean currents and eddies, the structure and variability of the Leeuwin Current system, and the impact of temperature and salinity variability on Indian Ocean currents.

Unraveling ocean mixing and air-sea forcing along the Indo-Pacific exchange (2021 - 2024)$764,194
Description
This project aims to collect unprecedented observations and develop high resolution model simulations to examine changes in the Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) north of Australia. This project expects to develop new knowledge of ocean-atmosphere interactions along the path of the ITF from the Pacific to the Indian Ocean, which are the powerhouse that drives changes in winds and rainfall around Australia and the entire Indo-Pacific region. Expected outcomes include a 1000-fold increase in the observations of mixing in the Indonesian seas and new understanding of the ocean-atmosphere processes that control water property change along the ITF. This should lead to strong improvement in the skill of climate forecast models in the Australian region.

The Australian Centre for Excellence in Antarctic Science (2020 - 2025)$22,302,208
Description
The Centre will revolutionise predictions of the future of East Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. Changes in the Antarctic will be profoundly costly to Australia, including sea-level and fisheries impacts; but the speed and scale of future change remains poorly understood. A new national-scale and interdisciplinary Centre is required to understand the complex interactions of the ocean, ice sheets, atmosphere and ecosystems that will govern Antarctica's future. The Centre will combine new field data with innovative models to address Australia's Antarctic science priorities, train graduate students, develop leaders, engage the public, and enable major economic benefit as Australia adapts to climate change in the coming years and beyond.

Project 5.7 Tracking ocean change: ocean observations and models (2020)$95,157
Description
The project will enhance Australia's resilience to climate variability, climate change, and their impacts by improving the national capacity to anticipate, interpret and respond to climate events and trends. Outcomes of the project will include:* More effective water resources planning, management and infrastructure investment;* More effective decision‐making in agriculture and planning, informed by improved and more relevant climate information at multi‐annual to multi‐decadal timescales;* A national policy for greenhouse gas mitigation guided by better estimates of the rate of planetary warming derived from observations of ocean heat content, and an enhanced ability to track the effectiveness of global mitigation efforts;* Coastal planning and development decisions informed by nationally coordinated data and information on changing sea levels and climate in coastal regions.

Ocean mixing at high Reynolds number: Efficiencies in extrema (2019 - 2021)$900,000
Description
This project aims to measure the efficiency of mixing in the ocean, which determines how much heat and momentum can be transferred to the ocean from winds and surface heating. Mixing is a key parameter in determining how much the ocean can absorb increasing atmospheric heat and carbon dioxide to insulate the planet from extreme warming. We will measure mixing efficiency in a range of environments including Cook Strait, NZ and the Antarctic Circumpolar Current.

Physical, chemical and biogeochemical gradients in the East Australian Current (2018)$0
Description
This voyage will train Masters students from the University of Tasmania in oceanographic methods. Students will map changes in temperature, salinity and nutrients along 2,500 km of the eastern Australian coast. Biological sampling will document the changes in ocean plankton from the subantarctic waters near Tasmania to the tropics. By observing the change in current biological communities along a south-to-north temperature gradient, students will gain an appreciation of changes that may occur over time due to climate change. Students will gain valuable training in oceanographic field techniques, data analysis and communication.

How topography brakes the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (2017 - 2020)$783,000
Description
The aim of this project is to observe and simulate the mechanisms that put the brakes on the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. The Southern Ocean winds have increased over the last two decades while the transport of the world's largest current remains steady or slightly decreasing. This is a perplexing observation. New negative feedback mechanisms between the winds and transport of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current have been advanced. This proposal addresses this critical issue in the momentum and energy balance of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current by directly observing how the eddies carry momentum from the wind down to the sea floor and accelerate the deep currents that drag against the rough bottom to put the brakes on this current.

Eddies: The key to understanding Southern Ocean carbon cycling (2016 - 2018)$269,900
Description
Ocean eddies are like small high and low pressure weather systems that spin either clockwise or anticlockwise, are about 100-200 km across and several hundred meters deep. Eddies are important because they generatevertical currents that move nutrients and carbon dioxide up and down. This work will observe an eddy in theSouthern Ocean for three weeks, to understand how its circulation impacts ocean productivity and the exchangeof carbon dioxide between the ocean and atmosphere. Outcomes will include a better understanding of carboncycling in an ocean region that is central to the climate of Australia and the rest of the planet.

Submarine volcanism and hydrothermalism around Heard and McDonald Islands (2015 - 2016)$65,600
Description
The scarcity of iron limits biological productivity and carbon uptake in the nutrient rich waters of the Southern Ocean. This project will explore for the first time the role of undersea "hotspot" volcanoes in supplying iron to surface waters, thus linking the solid earth and the biosphere. Existing data indicate that fields of submarine volcanoes extend for several hundred kilometres from Heard and McDonald islands, among the world's most active hotspot volcanoes. We will produce a three dimensional, high-resolution bathymetric and backscatter map of the seafloor surrounding the islands. We will map the water column for chemical signatures of hydrothermal activity. From this mapping we will identify and sample candidate active submarine volcanoes, a first for this region. We will measure iron abundance, and reactivity in buoyant plumes over and downstream of these volcanoes, and evaluate physical mixing processes that might deliver this iron to surface waters.

Assessment of habitats, productivity and food webs on the Kerguelen Axis in the Indian Sector of the Southern Ocean (2015)$0
Description
The Southern Ocean is one of the most rapidly changing environments on earth. Australia seeks to sustain marine resources of high fisheries and conservation value that are dependent on the productive ecosystems of the Kerguelen Axis (including Australia's Territory of Heard Island and McDonald Islands south to the Antarctic continent). The Kerguelen Axis has never been surveyed as a single region to determine the critical relationships between environmental and biogeochemical drivers responsible for the transition between the northern copepod-fish dominated foodweb to the southern krill-based foodweb. This knowledge is essential for ecosystem-based management of fisheries, as well as conservation of whale populations and marine biodiversity. The results will be important for assessing likely responses to change in the ecosystem (from climate or fisheries) as well as change in the global oceans and carbon cycle, which are fundamental to the Earth's response to climate change
