Associate Professor Jeremy Lyle is a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies. He is interested in the field of fisheries ecology and biology with a particular focus on understanding fish population dynamics, the impacts of fishing on fish stocks and the characteristics of the recreational as well as commercial fishing sectors.

Biography

After completing his PhD at the University of Liverpool (UK), Jeremy was employed as a fisheries scientist in the Northern Territory where he led a major initiative to develop a shark fishery off northern Australia. From there he joined the then Tasmanian Sea Fisheries Department and later the Tasmanian Aquaculture and Fisheries Institute (TAFI), University of Tasmania. TAFI became part of the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies in 2010. He has worked on a wide variety of commercial fisheries, including offshore trawl, small pelagics and coastal fisheries, as well as conducting recreational fishing surveys over many years. The primary focus of his research has been to understand the impacts of fishing on target and non-target species and provide the science required to support the sustainable management of the fish stocks.

Developing a cost-effective monitoring regime and stock assessment for Sand Flathead in Tasmania (2020 - 2025)$703,700
Description
Sand Flathead account for well over half of the total catch (by numbers) taken by marine recreational fishersin Tasmania and represent the mainstay of Tasmania's recreational fishery. Furthermore, since therecreational catch of sand flathead is more than 20 times the commercial catch, trends in commercial catchand catch rates are of little value in inferring changes in stock status. This has meant that fishery independentor novel assessment methods are required. To date, IMAS has implemented a research program focused onsand flathead in the south-east of the state that provides a spatially restricted, perspective and semiquantitativeevaluation of stock condition. Given the significance of the species and a status of 'depleting' inthe latest stock assessment report, there is a need to implement a more comprehensive stock monitoringapproach throughout the state that can support the development of a spatially explicit quantitative stockassessment model. There is also a need to determine the appropriate spatial resolution to apply to the stockassessment model. As such, there is a need to understand the extent of adult movement and ontogeneticconnectivity of regional sub-populations of sand flathead throughout Tasmania. In addition, by collation ofbiological data sets from historical studies and surveys conducted around Tasmania the extent and directionof potential changes in population size structures, and life history characteristics will be investigated. Wherepossible collated biological data will be used to assess spatial and temporal changes in life historycharacteristics to assess the implications of selective excessive fishing pressure and/or past and futureclimate change effects for this species.

Life-history and reproductive behaviour of the vulnerable Melbourne skate to inform fisheries management and conservation (2020 - 2022)$42,626
Description
Given its large body-size, with Dulvy and Reynolds (2002, Cons Biol 16:440) finding that skate species that have suffered local extinction have large body sizes compared with all other skates, coupled with the already observed population declines, its high susceptibility fishing pressure and the virtual complete lack of biological and ecological information, the Melbourne skate may be particularly vulnerable to local extinction. As such, this project aims to address this lack of vital information available in order to guide conservation efforts for this vulnerable species. Specifically, we aim to define the species' (i) life history (age, growth and reproduction), (ii) distribution and abundance in south-east Australia, (iii) population productivity, (iv) use of inshore protected areas, (v) candidate egg laying and nursery grounds and (vi) extinction risk.

The impacts of climate change on behaviour and physiology of key elasmobranch species in Southeast Tasmania (2020 - 2022)$19,635
Description
This research meets the HERDC five core criteria as there is limited behavioural and physiology research pertaining to fluctuating temperatures, especially compounded with changing salinities, that has been conducted on these species, as well being the first study to measure the rates of protein synthesis (PS) in elasmobranchs (1: novel & 2: creative). Because this is the first research of its kind on these sharks and rays, as well novel in measuring elasmobranch PS rates, the final outcomes are uncertain as the response to stressors varies across species and rates of PS are unknown (3: uncertain). The ideas and proposals for this research have been outlined in a project plan which also includes a detailed budget to prepare for the total cost of the project in advance (4: systemic). All research methods will be recorded and reported, including novel PS procedures, and data will be presented in an understandable and accessible way to allow for reproduction of research or procedures with other species (5: transferable/reproducible).

Opportunities and impacts of range extending scalefish species: understanding population dynamics, ecosystem impacts and management needs (2019 - 2020)$249,587
Description
Species-level responses to ocean warming is a priority research area as they underpin the structure and function of marine ecosystems and the productivity of fisheries that operate within them. There are a number of range extending species that have become increasingly abundant in Tasmanian waters, providing new fishing opportunities for recreational and, to a lesser extent, commercial fishers. Species in this group include Pink Snapper, King George Whiting and Yellowtail Kingfish. While King George Whiting are known to spawn off the north coast it is unclear as to whether the other species have or are likely to become established as self-sustaining populations in Tasmanian waters or simply persist as spill-over from populations that are centered off mainland Australia. If the former is the case, it will be especially important to consider population attributes such as growth, mortality and reproductive dynamics relevant to the Tasmanian populations when developing and refining management arrangements. In addition, the broader ecosystem impacts of such range extending species, including competition with species at similar trophic levels, are unknown but could have consequences for other recreationally and commercially important species. Understanding these relationships will have benefits for the assessment and management of the Tasmanian recreational fishery more generally.

Where do Calamari spawn in Northern Tasmania and how will this information aid the management of the Calamari fishery in Northern Tasmania? (2016 - 2019)$169,493
Description
Calamari, like most cephalopods, are highly productive, however there short lifespan means that it is vitally important that they are allowed to spawn successfully as there is only ever a single cohort within the fishery. The north coast calamari fishery is expanding in terms of catch and effort by both the commercial and recreational sectors and there is no mechanism to prevent further expansion by either sector. There is currently no understanding of spatial or temporal variation in spawning in this region and environmental conditions are vastly different to the south east. The impacts of the expansion on the productivity of the species is unknown and thus, there is no information available to predict the possible impact of further expansion, which is likely to occur in both the recreational and commercial sectors. The calamari fishery is increasing in value and overexpansion in this fishery is likely to have negative economic ramifications for the fishery due to both overcapacity and decreased productivity.

Assessing effectiveness of refuge areas for conservation of coastal sharks (2011 - 2013)$86,635
Description
This project seeks to extend work on investigating the role of sevengill sharks Notorynchus cepedianus in coastal areas of south east Tasmania. A major component of the current project is using acoustic technology to investigate the movement patterns of sevengill sharks within these coastal areas. This project will continue using acoustic technology to gather long term data on the movement patterns for the chondrichthyan assemblage of south east Tasmania. Due to the availability of long term infrastructure in the form of permanent VR2 receiver arrays deployed throughout south east Australia, this project has a unique opportunity to monitor long term and long distance movement patterns for several chondrichthyan species tagged with acoustic transmitters in south east Tasmania. Additionally this project aims to determine the size and age structure of juvenile shark populations in nursery areas by using stereo baited remote underwater video cameras (BRUVs) as a survey tool. This multi-species approach will address a range of relevant issues associated with managing and conserving chondrichthyans, such as identifying important habitats for chondrichthyan species, evaluating the effectiveness of protected areas, investigate long distance migrations and predicting predator-prey relationships. The project will have a strong emphasis on conservation and management of top order predators, and will provide optimal management strategies for a number of shark species. This project will address the need for a broader understanding of ecosystem issues in the management of commercial fisheries. For example, it will further build on the knowledge of species interactions in these systems by evaluating the impact of sevengill sharks on other shark species that are commercially fished. This information will assist in ecosystem management (as opposed to single species management) which should be the goal of all conservation and fisheries management plans.
