The researcher who plans on ‘de-stressing’ the PhD experience
These are benefits that anyone can encounter.
From answering the big questions in regional development to measuring the impact of mindfulness practice on PhD students, this Australian researcher is capturing our experiences to support better policy development.
“My job as a researcher is to play a role somewhat akin to a narrator in a movie – I’m providing the overriding structure of the story,” explains Dr Megan Woods from the Tasmanian School of Business and Economics.
Dr Woods specialises in qualitative research methods, which means gathering non-numerical data through interviews, focus groups, observations of behaviour, social media, and document analysis, to capture people's experiences.
Through her expertise, she’s played an integral role in the completion of an award-winning study, which is helping policy-makers foster innovation and entrepreneurship in Australia’s agricultural regions.
During the course of this study, Dr Woods was responsible for designing a method of analysis for the qualitative data they collected, and training a research team in carrying out this analysis to better understand the needs of Australia’s agricultural regions.
“One of the issues that came out in all six regions we looked at was water security, but the way the issue of water security plays out in those regions is very different,” Dr Woods explains.
“This is what I love about doing qualitative research – you get a feel for the similarity of issues people might be dealing with, but also an understanding of why these issues are playing out differently, and why they need different approaches to resolve them.”
While Dr Woods continues her work in regional development, her qualitative research expertise has seen her recruited to a project closer to home.
Along with her internationally recognised work on mental health in the workplace, Dr Woods is currently collaborating with Dr Karen Barry at the University of Tasmania, who is leading a new study on the stresses faced by PhD students, and the effect of mindfulness practice on managing that stress.
“When we did the research, I was engaging in it as somebody who supervises students and uses mindfulness in her own life, but again I was recruited onto that project for my qualitative research expertise,” Dr Woods explains.
Because of this expertise, the team was able to measure whether mindfulness practice was helpful in managing the stress of PhD candidates. And as it turns out, it was.
“When the students were dealing with stressful situations, it was directly helpful, because they’d stop and do their mindfulness practice, and that would help them calm down and get a bit more focussed,” Dr Woods recalls.
On top of this, Dr Woods was able to gather more detailed data through her survey design to capture more nuanced findings, such as the indirect benefits of mindfulness practice.
“Some people said that because they were doing their mindfulness practice last thing at night, one of the added benefits was a better night’s sleep. And because they got better sleep, they felt better overall,” she says.
“We have some interesting insights about what people found it helpful for, but also from those who didn’t find it helpful.”
For Dr Woods, these findings are just the beginning.
“When these candidates were talking about how mindfulness was beneficial, it’s great, because these are benefits and circumstances that any person can encounter,” she says.
“The single most common response we get when we tell people about this work is, ‘Is there any chance you could replicate this study for academics?’ That’ll be something we’ll look at in the future, because we know their stress as well – we just need to find better ways to help them.”
Research that makes a difference
Dr Megan Woods completed her doctoral research at the University of Tasmania where she works as a lecturer in Management for the Tasmanian School of Business and Economics. Megan's doctoral research explored the adaptive learning processes that underpinned successful collaboration in a long-running alliance network. Her postdoctoral research has examined the adaptive learning processes of individuals, organisations and inter-organisational networks. Megan also has a longstanding interest in computer-assisted qualitative data analysis (CAQDA) using programs such as N-Vivo and has researched their methodological applications, the impact of their use on researcher reflexivity, and current and best practices for using and reporting use of CAQDA programs.
Biography
Megan joined the University of Tasmania in 2004 as an associate lecturer while completing her doctoral research. Since becoming a lecturer in 2006 she has been a Visiting Scholar at the University of Tennessee (USA) and Copenhagen Business School (Denmark).

Megan has over fifteen years' experience in teaching researchers to use the NVivo (previously NUD*IST) program for qualitative data analysis and teaches a postgraduate coursework unit which focuses specifically on computer-supported approaches to analysing data.
Megan also has extensive experience of teaching introductory management, human resource management, international human resource management, and research methods at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. She has co-authored two texts for introductory-level management students: Management in Focus: The Global Financial Crisis (2009) written with Tom Valentine, and Management: The Essentials (now in its 3rd edition). Her most recent work focuses on teaching managers to manage mental health issues in the workplace.

Research Themes
Megan research interests in computer-assisted qualitative data analysis (CAQDA) aligns with the UTas strategic theme of Data, Knowledge and Decisions. Her research interest in CAQDA includes understanding how the use of CAQDA programs such as N-Vivo influence research processes and research outcomes and is focused on helping researchers make more informed decisions about whether and how to use such tools to enhance their research productivity and value. Megan's research into the methodological applications of CAQDA programs and ways in which their use influences research processes informs her research, teaching and community service for the University of Tasmania. She has taught over 200 UTas researchers to use such programs and helped organisations such as Regional Development Australia, Council on the Ageing and the Tasmanian Council of Social Service to use N-Vivo to enhance their community consultation research. She is currently researching current and best practices in using CAQDA programs and reporting their usage.
Megan's interest in adaptive learning and innovative behaviour by individuals, organisations and communities aligns with the UTas strategic themes of Data, Knowledge and Decisions, and Environment, Resources and Sustainability. Her work in this area is focused on understanding the knowledge and adaptive learning processes which can be used to enhance individual well-being, organisational performance and community development. Megan's research has been used to inform policy development by the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation and Regional Development Australia (Tasmania ) and as the basis for a suite of resources Megan and her colleagues Angela Martin, Rob Macklin and Sarah Dawkins were recently commissioned to develop for the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Management to teach MBA students about managing mental health issues in the workplace. She is currently researching the knowledge bases, adaptive learning and decision processes associated with managing stress in PhD candidature, fostering regional development of agricultural regions, and promoting mental health in the workplace.
Collaboration
Megan has previously been involved with collaborative research involving the Tasmanian School of Business and Economics, the Tas Institute of Agriculture (TIA) and the Institute of Regional Development at the University of Tasmania which developed an analytical framework for enhancing policy decisions about the development of agricultural regions. This research, funded by the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation, is now being extended through a new collaboration that will extend the framework to facilitate regional comparisons for policy development.
She is also currently engaged in a collaboration with researchers from UTAS, the University of Tennessee and the University of Georgia to explore the uses of computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software programs.
Awards
At the 2016 Annual conference for the Academy of Management, Angela Martin, Megan Woods and Sarah Dawkins’ article entitled “Managing Employees With Mental Health Issues: Identification of Conceptual and Procedural Knowledge for Development Within Management Education Curricula” was announced as equal runner-up for the Academy of Management Learning and Education best paper for 2015.

Megan's methodological work on computer-assisted qualitative data analysis and the use of CAQDA software programs has been published in The Qualitative Report, the International Journal of Social Research Methodology, the International Journal of Public Sector Management and an edited volume on Qualitative Research in Business and Management, published by Sage. Megan's work on inter-organisational collaboration has been published in journals such as the Journal of Research in Marketing and Entrepreneurship and the International Journal of Strategic Business Alliances and also featured in the edited volume Managing Knowledge in Strategic Alliances published by Information Age Publishing.

- The IIO project is being undertaken by WorkSafe Tasmania to improve injury outcomes and the workers compensation system. The primary objective of the IIO Project is to analyse the workers compensation system within the Tasmanian State Service (TSS) to identify factors (culture, system and process) to improve the performance for employees and employers. The project will focus specifically on the four government agencies of Department of Justice, Department of Police, Fire and Emergency Management, Department for Education, Children and Young People, and Department of Health.

- The project will co-create two suites of resources (for workers and for managers) to guide workers through the process of returning to work from a mental health condition. These two suites of resources will be developed to complement each other and work in tandem to help workers and their supervisors a) better understand how to navigate and negotiate the return-to-work process, b) develop their skills in working through that process and developing effective supportive and appropriate workplace supports for the returning worker, and c) feel more confident about engaging in the return-to-work process.

- The project objective is to develop a framework and toolbox that can be used to accurately describe the current and expected future contributions of agriculture to regions, and to implement this framework and toolbox to examine the contribution of agriculture to regional development in the case study region of North West Tasmania. The project methodology consists of three phases, each involving multiple steps which will be conducted concurrently. It relies on both existing and new qualitative and quantitative data sources, and uses a mixed methodology to analyse the data once collected. Expected data sources include: demographic and economic datasets; desktop analysis, including theoretical and practical frameworks and tools derived from the literature review and key practitioners; peer commentary and targeted conversations; interviews with key stakeholders including industry and government as well as other targeted individuals involved in the value chain (e.g. Input suppliers, producers, processors or wholesalers, third party logistics (3pl) providers, retailers and consumers); observations arising from scenario modelling and analysis, including inputs into this process; *subregional workshops which will be used not only to collect data but also for testing purposes.
